Colorful Sausage and Vegetable Stir-Fry: A Kid-Favorite Recipe

My eldest daughter said, “Mom, I want sausage and vegetable stir-fry!”, so I made it with care. Here’s a recipe for a visually appealing and delicious sausage and vegetable stir-fry. It’s perfect not only as a side dish for kids but also as a simple appetizer.

Recipe Info

  • Category : Side dish
  • Ingredient Category : Processed foods
  • Occasion : Everyday
  • Cooking : Stir-fry
  • Servings : 4 servings
  • Cooking Time : Within 30 minutes
  • Difficulty : Anyone

Main Ingredients

  • About 30 sausages (small cocktail sausages or regular sausages, both are great!)
  • 1/8 head of cabbage (cut into bite-sized pieces)
  • 1/2 onion (sliced or diced)
  • A small amount of carrot (thinly sliced or julienned)

Seasoning

  • 5 Tbsp ketchup (the key to that sweet and tangy flavor!)
  • 1 Tbsp oyster sauce (adds a deep umami flavor)
  • 1 Tbsp cooking syrup (or corn syrup) (for shine and sweetness)
  • 2 Tbsp water (to adjust the sauce consistency and make it moist)
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil (for a nutty aroma)
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds (sprinkled on top for garnish)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the sausages. For easier eating, you can thread them onto skewers, or make cross-shaped cuts on them. When cooked, they’ll open up beautifully, making them even more appealing. If you’re using regular sausages, slice them into bite-sized pieces.

Step 1

Step 2

Next, let’s prepare the vegetables. Feel free to use up any leftover vegetables you have in the fridge! I’ve cut the cabbage, onion, and carrot I prepared into bite-sized pieces (about 1 cm thick). Adding bell peppers for color is also a great idea.

Step 2

Step 3

Heat 2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a wide pan or wok over medium-low heat. Add 1 tablespoon of minced garlic and stir-fry until fragrant. Sautéing the garlic until its aroma infuses the oil will add a deeper flavor.

Step 3

Step 4

Once the garlic is fragrant, add all the prepared vegetables – cabbage, onion, and carrot – and stir-fry quickly over high heat. Stir-frying over high heat for a short time is crucial to maintain the vegetables’ crispiness. Cook just until the vegetables are slightly softened.

Step 4

Step 5

When the vegetables are slightly wilted, add the prepared sausages and stir-fry together. Cook until the cuts in the sausages open up nicely. The sausages themselves release some oil, so you don’t need to add extra oil.

Step 5

Step 6

Once the sausages are lightly browned and the cuts are opening up attractively, add 5 tablespoons of ketchup. This is the start of that sweet and tangy flavor kids love!

Step 6

Step 7

Next, add 1 tablespoon of oyster sauce to bring in a deep, rich umami flavor. Oyster sauce is like a magic ingredient that elevates any dish with just a small amount.

Step 7

Step 8

Add 1 tablespoon of cooking syrup (or corn syrup) for a nice glaze and mild sweetness. If the sauce seems too thick, adding about 2 tablespoons of water will adjust the consistency, resulting in a moister and smoother stir-fry.

Step 8

Step 9

Now, stir-fry everything together until the sauce is evenly coated on all the ingredients. Since all the ingredients are already cooked and the vegetables can even be eaten raw, you don’t need to stir-fry for too long. Just cook until the sauce is well incorporated.

Step 9

Step 10

Finally, just before turning off the heat, drizzle in 1 tablespoon of sesame oil for a nutty aroma and sprinkle 1 teaspoon of toasted sesame seeds on top. Your delicious sausage and vegetable stir-fry is complete! It’s also wonderful served over warm rice.
