Basic Gimbap Filling Ingredients

  • 1 cucumber
  • 2 carrots
  • A pinch of salt
  • A little olive oil
  • 1 pack of fish cake
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 Tbsp oyster sauce
  • 5 sticks of imitation crab meat
  • 5 strips of pickled radish
  • Cooked burdock root to taste
  • 5 sheets of seaweed (gim)
  • 5 servings of cooked rice
  • A little sesame oil
  • A little sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, let’s prepare the gimbap fillings. Wash the cucumber, remove the seeds, and cut it into thick, long strips suitable for gimbap. Wash the carrots, peel them, and cut them into thin, even matchsticks.

Step 1

Step 2

Heat a little olive oil in a pan. Add the sliced cucumber and a pinch of salt. Sauté until the cucumber becomes tender, being careful not to overcook it until mushy.

Step 2

Step 3

Now, sauté the carrots in a similar manner. Add a little olive oil to the pan and stir-fry the julienned carrots with a pinch of salt. The goal is to cook them lightly until they are still slightly crisp, enhancing their natural sweetness.

Step 3

Step 4

Slice the fish cake (1 pack) into thin strips. In a pan, combine the fish cake strips with 1 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp maple syrup, and 1 Tbsp oyster sauce. Stir-fry until the sauce coats the fish cake and it’s slightly sweet and savory.

Step 4

Step 5

Your gimbap fillings are almost ready! Shred the imitation crab meat sticks. Prepare the pickled radish and cooked burdock root by cutting them to match the length of the seaweed sheets.

Step 5

Step 6

In a bowl, season 5 servings of warm cooked rice with salt and a generous amount of sesame oil. Mix well while the rice is hot to ensure the seasonings are evenly distributed. Gently combine with a rice paddle to avoid mashing the grains.

Step 6

Step 7

Place a sheet of seaweed (gim) shiny-side down on a bamboo rolling mat. Spread a thin, even layer of seasoned rice over the rough side of the seaweed, leaving about a 1-2 cm border at the top edge for sealing.

Step 7

Step 8

Arrange all the prepared fillings (sautéed cucumber, carrots, seasoned fish cake, imitation crab meat, pickled radish, burdock root) neatly over the rice. Avoid overfilling to prevent the gimbap from breaking when rolled.

Step 8

Step 9

Now, let’s roll the gimbap! Lift the edge of the mat closest to you, tucking the fillings in, and roll tightly. Apply a little mashed rice to the top edge of the seaweed to help seal the roll securely.

Step 9

Step 10

Slice the rolled gimbap into bite-sized pieces, about 1.5-2 cm thick. Lightly coat your knife with sesame oil to prevent sticking. Brush a thin layer of sesame oil over the exterior of the gimbap for a glossy finish and enhanced flavor.

Step 10

Step 11

Arrange two rolls of sliced gimbap attractively on a serving plate. Sprinkle with sesame seeds for a final touch of flavor and visual appeal.

Step 11

Step 12

Enjoy your delicious homemade gimbap! It’s a wonderful and convenient dish to make for family outings, picnics, or special occasions at home.
