Classic Jambon-Beurre Sandwich
Make a Simple and Delicious Jambon-Beurre Sandwich with Baguette
I find that the most fundamental things are often the most delicious. Just like plain yogurt or classic-flavored snacks, I believe the French national sandwich, Jambon-Beurre, is at its best when it stays true to its roots. Today, I’ve made a ‘diet’ Jambon-Beurre using a baguette, focusing on lower calories while retaining its wonderful flavor. It’s a simple yet incredibly satisfying meal or brunch option.
Ingredients- 1/2 Baguette
- 50g Jambon (cured ham)
- 30g Unsalted Butter
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
For this authentic Jambon-Beurre, I’ve prepared a classic baguette that’s crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. While many variations use different breads today, a baguette is the true original and offers the purest taste. I’ve lightly baked mine in the oven to enhance its crispiness.
Step 2
I’m using a ‘par-baked’ baguette, which is a lifesaver for single households! These baguettes are baked 85-90% and then flash-frozen, allowing you to finish baking them at home in an oven or air fryer for a fresh-baked experience. I baked mine in a preheated oven at 200°C (390°F) for 12 minutes. The result was perfectly golden, crispy crust and a warm, tender interior. (Tip: Adjust baking time according to your oven’s specifications.)
Step 3
Once the baguette is nicely baked, let it cool slightly. If the bread is too hot, the butter will melt and run off. It should be comfortably warm to the touch. Using a serrated bread knife, carefully slice the baguette horizontally in half. It’s important to cut it straight across to ensure even halves. Using a leveling guide that fits onto a bread knife can make this much easier.
Step 4
Butter is key to the rich flavor of a Jambon-Beurre. Let the butter sit at room temperature for a short while until it’s soft enough to cut easily. Slice it to your desired thickness for spreading. You can slice it thinly or slightly thicker, depending on your preference.
Step 5
Place the sliced butter onto the cut side of the baguette. The residual warmth of the bread will gently melt the butter, allowing it to soak in. If you prefer a smoother spread, you can briefly microwave the butter or use a spreader (butter knife) to apply a thin, even layer across the bread.
Step 6
Arrange the Jambon (cured ham) attractively over the butter. Jambon is a thinly sliced French ham known for its savory and deep flavor. I’ve folded or rolled my 50g of Jambon into pleasing portions and placed them on the bread. The combination of the ham’s juices and the rich butter will create a fantastic taste.
Step 7
Finally, place the other half of the baguette on top to complete your authentic French Jambon-Beurre sandwich! It’s incredibly simple, yet so appealing because it highlights the natural flavors of fresh ingredients. Enjoy it as is, or add a pinch of freshly ground black pepper if you like. Anyone can make this easily, so give it a try! 🙂
