- 0.5 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste) (for a mild spiciness)
- 5 Tbsp Ketchup (the key to sweet & sour flavor)
- 1 Tbsp Soy Sauce (for umami)
- 1 Tbsp Oyster Sauce (for enhanced flavor!)
- 2 Tbsp Oligodang (corn syrup or rice syrup) (for shine and sweetness)
- 1 Tbsp Sugar (to adjust sweetness)
- 3 Tbsp Water (to adjust sauce consistency)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare your rice tteok (tteokbokki cakes). If using frozen tteok, thaw them beforehand.
Step 2
To make the tteok softer and chewier, soak them in cold water for about 5-10 minutes. After soaking, drain them thoroughly in a colander. (Be careful not to soak them for too long, or they might become mushy.)
Step 3
In a small bowl, combine 0.5 Tbsp gochujang, 5 Tbsp ketchup, 1 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp oyster sauce, 2 Tbsp oligodang, 1 Tbsp sugar, and 3 Tbsp water. Stir well with a spoon until all ingredients are smoothly incorporated to create a delicious sauce. Ensure everything is blended evenly.
Step 4
Heat a pan over medium heat with a generous amount of cooking oil. Add the soaked rice tteok and fry them until they are lightly golden brown and slightly crispy on the outside, yet remain chewy inside. Once the tteok are cooked, pour in the prepared sauce and stir-fry quickly to coat the tteok evenly with the sauce.
Step 5
When the sauce has coated the tteok nicely, turn off the heat. Finally, drizzle in 1 tsp of sesame oil and sprinkle with your chosen nuts or sesame seeds. Your super simple and delicious Rice Tteokbokki Gangjeong is ready! Let it cool slightly before enjoying.
