Ingredients- 400g shrimp meat (peeled and deveined)
- 1/2 carrot
- 1 chili pepper (e.g., Korean mild chili pepper or jalapeño)
- 2 Tbsp potato starch (or cornstarch)
- 1/2 Tbsp salt
- A pinch of black pepper
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, wash the carrot thoroughly, peel it, and then mince it very finely. Finely mincing the carrot ensures it mixes evenly into the shrimp mixture and provides a smooth texture when cooked.
Step 2
Remove the seeds from the chili pepper (using a colorful red chili or a jalapeño for a bit of heat works well) and mince it finely, just like the carrot. The mild spiciness of the chili pepper will cut through any richness and add a lovely aroma.
Step 3
Lightly rinse the shrimp meat under running water and pat it dry. Then, finely mince it using the back of a knife or a food processor. It’s best to mince it in a way that still retains some texture, rather than making it completely paste-like.
Step 4
In a large bowl, combine the minced shrimp, carrot, and chili pepper. Add the potato starch, salt, and black pepper. Use a spatula or your hands to mix and knead the ingredients thoroughly until a cohesive dough forms. Kneading for about 5 minutes until it becomes slightly sticky will improve the texture.
Step 5
Lay out a sheet of parchment paper or plastic wrap. Place the shrimp mixture onto the wrap. Placing the dough on wrap makes shaping much easier.
Step 6
Using the wrap, roll the shrimp mixture tightly like a sushi roll. Pull the wrap taut as you roll to ensure the fish cake holds its shape firmly after steaming. Tuck in the ends securely.
Step 7
Place the rolled shrimp fish cake into a steamer basket with boiling water. Cover and steam for about 15 minutes. Steaming over medium-high heat for about 15 minutes will cook the shrimp thoroughly and firm up the mixture, creating delicious shrimp fish cakes.
Step 8
Once steamed and cooled slightly, remove the wrap from the shrimp fish cake. Slice it into bite-sized pieces or desired shapes. Slicing it into moderate thickness, similar to store-bought fish cakes, is recommended.
Step 9
These warm, steamed shrimp fish cakes are delicious on their own, but for an enhanced flavor experience, serve them with ketchup, mustard, or a dipping sauce of your choice.
Step 10
Enjoy your homemade, delicious shrimp fish cakes!
