Main Ingredients
- 5 medium-sized orange sweet potatoes
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Prepare 5 medium-sized orange sweet potatoes, which are recommended for their sweet and soft texture, ideal for making dried snacks. Orange sweet potatoes tend to yield a chewier and tastier result compared to starchier varieties.
Step 2
Using a peeler, carefully remove the skin from the prepared sweet potatoes. Peeling them cleanly will result in a more appealing dried snack.
Step 3
Arrange the peeled sweet potatoes in a steamer basket, cover with a lid, and steam for approximately 25 minutes until very tender. Ensuring they are thoroughly cooked through is key for a soft texture in the final product.
Step 4
While the sweet potatoes are still warm, slice them into pieces about the thickness of your finger. Slicing them too thinly can cause them to break, while slices that are too thick may not dry properly. Aim for a consistent thickness.
Step 5
Place the sliced sweet potato pieces on the dehydrator trays, ensuring there is some space between each piece so they don’t touch. Ample spacing allows for even drying.
Step 6
Set the food dehydrator to 60°C (140°F) and dehydrate for about 6 hours. The drying time can vary depending on the thickness of the sweet potato slices and the humidity. Check the consistency of the sweet potatoes periodically and adjust the time as needed. They are ready when the outside is slightly chewy and the inside remains moist.
Step 7
The dried sweet potato snacks are perfectly done when they are not crumbly and bend gently into a ‘U’ shape without breaking. Once completely cooled, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator to enjoy for a longer period.
