Easy Homemade Tortilla Recipe
After trying tortillas at a restaurant for the first time and realizing they tasted like a savory pancake, I was inspired to make them at home. Following homecuisine’s recipe, I’ve detailed the process of creating delicious homemade tortillas that anyone can easily follow. Experience the wonderful texture of freshly made tortillas!
Tortilla Dough Ingredients- 200g All-purpose flour
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 Egg
- 1 Tbsp Butter
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, sift the 200g of all-purpose flour, which is the base for our tortillas. Sifting helps to break up any clumps and ensures a smoother dough.
Step 2
In a bowl, combine 1 tsp of salt and 1 Tbsp of butter. Add a little hot water and stir until the butter has mostly melted. It’s okay if small pieces of butter remain.
Step 3
In a larger bowl, combine the sifted flour and 1 egg. Pour in the salt and butter mixture you prepared. Now, gradually add hot water while mixing with a spatula or your hands. It’s important to adjust the amount of water so the dough isn’t too sticky. Knead for about 3 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and no longer sticks to your hands.
Step 4
Cover the smoothly formed dough with plastic wrap and let it rest at room temperature for 30 minutes. Resting the dough makes it chewier and more tender. After resting, lightly dust your work surface with flour and divide the dough into 5 equal portions.
Step 5
Now it’s time to roll out each dough portion thinly using a rolling pin and some flour for dusting. Roll the edges thinner than the center. Aim for an even thickness throughout, rolling the dough until it’s almost translucent when held up to the light. This thinness is key for a perfect tortilla.
Step 6
Heat a non-stick skillet over high heat until hot, then reduce the heat to medium-low. Carefully place the rolled-out dough onto the skillet, trying to avoid wrinkles. When you see small bubbles forming on the surface, flip the tortilla. Gently press down on the bubbles to release any trapped air, and cook until both sides are golden brown. Be careful not to overcook, as this will make them stiff. Cook just until they feel pliable and soft.
Step 7
Place the cooked tortillas on a plate lined with paper towels to cool slightly. Once they are warm but not hot, store them in a resealable plastic bag to retain their moisture. This will help keep them soft. These homemade tortillas can be refrigerated or frozen for later use.
