Chewy and Delicious Stir-fried Fish Cake Recipe
Simple Side Dish, Moist 10-Minute Stir-fried Fish Cake
Introducing a recipe for moist and delicious stir-fried fish cake. This is a fantastic side dish that can be made in just 10 minutes with ingredients you likely have in your fridge. It’s perfect as a side for rice or a snack for kids!
Main Ingredients- 4 sheets of square fish cake (eomuk)
- 1/4 onion
- A little carrot (about 30g)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare 4 sheets of square fish cake. Pour hot water over both sides of the fish cake to lightly rinse off any excess oil and impurities. Then, rinse them once more in cold water to firm up the texture. Squeeze out any excess water.
Step 2
Cut the prepared fish cakes into bite-sized pieces. You can cut them into about 0.7-1 cm thick strips, or fold them in half lengthwise before cutting for a prettier shape after stir-frying.
Step 3
Thinly slice the onion into strips. Julienne the carrot to a similar thickness. Cutting the vegetables to about the same length as the fish cake will help them blend well when stir-fried.
Step 4
Heat about 1 Tbsp of cooking oil in a pan over low heat. Add 0.5 Tbsp of minced garlic and stir-fry gently until it turns golden brown, being careful not to burn it, to release its fragrant aroma.
Step 5
Once the garlic is fragrant, add the cut fish cakes to the pan and stir-fry over medium heat. It’s important to keep stirring to prevent the fish cakes from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
Step 6
After the fish cakes have been stir-fried slightly, sprinkle a pinch of black pepper over them. The pepper will enhance the overall flavor of the fish cakes.
Step 7
Next, add 1 Tbsp of cooking wine (like mirin) and pour it evenly over the fish cakes. Cooking wine helps to eliminate any fishy odor and adds a savory depth. Continue to stir-fry.
Step 8
While stir-frying the fish cakes, add the julienned carrots and onions to the pan. Stir-fry over medium heat for about 1 minute. Cook just until the vegetables soften slightly. If you prefer a crunchier texture, reduce the cooking time.
Step 9
Now it’s time to season. Add 1 Tbsp of soy sauce, 1 tsp of oyster sauce, and 1 Tbsp of corn syrup (or honey) around the edges of the pan. Adding the sauces this way helps them to dissolve better and enhances their flavor.
Step 10
Reduce the heat to medium-low. Stir everything together evenly to coat the fish cakes and vegetables with the sauce, making sure it doesn’t burn. Continue to stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until the sauce is well incorporated.
Step 11
Finally, just before turning off the heat, drizzle in 1 Tbsp of sesame oil and sprinkle with sesame seeds. It’s best to mix gently after turning off the heat to preserve the nutty aroma of the sesame oil.
Step 12
Serve the deliciously moist stir-fried fish cake in a bowl. Your perfect side dish is ready!
