Chewy and Delicious Stir-Fried Ferns: Mom’s Secret Recipe
A Taste of Home: Easy Stir-Fried Fern Recipe
I missed the side dishes my mom used to make, so I tried to recreate the comforting taste of stir-fried ferns from memory. This recipe brings back nostalgic flavors with its satisfying chewy texture.
Main Ingredients
- 1 bunch cooked fern (approx. 150-200g)
- 1/4 onion, thinly sliced
Seasoning Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 Tbsp cooking wine (Mirin or similar)
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds
- 1 Tbsp soy sauce or fish sauce
- 1 Tbsp canola oil (or vegetable oil)
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 Tbsp cooking wine (Mirin or similar)
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds
- 1 Tbsp soy sauce or fish sauce
- 1 Tbsp canola oil (or vegetable oil)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Rinse the pre-cooked fern, purchased from the market, under cold running water 2-3 times. Drain well and cut into bite-sized pieces (about 5cm length). If using fresh fern, ensure it’s boiled until tender before proceeding.
Step 2
Heat 1 Tbsp of canola oil (or vegetable oil) in a pan over low heat. Add 1 Tbsp of minced garlic and sauté gently until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic; aim for a lightly golden color.
Step 3
Once the garlic is fragrant, add the prepared fern to the pan. Stir-fry over medium heat for 2-3 minutes. Since the fern is already cooked, it doesn’t need to be sautéed for a long time. The goal is to let it absorb the garlic flavor.
Step 4
When the fern is lightly stir-fried, add the sliced onion and cook together until the onion becomes translucent. Then, add 1 Tbsp cooking wine, 1 Tbsp soy sauce (or fish sauce), and 1 Tbsp sesame oil. Stir everything together for another minute until well combined. Finally, sprinkle 1 Tbsp of toasted sesame seeds over the top to finish. Your delicious stir-fried fern is ready!
