Chewy and Crispy Acorn Jelly Pancake (Dotori Muk Jeon)
Acorn Jelly Pancake, Acorn Jelly Recipe, Muk Sauce, Easy Snack, Diet Food
Acorn jelly is a popular choice for those on a diet due to its low calorie count and the presence of tannin, which is believed to help inhibit fat absorption. While it’s commonly enjoyed simply blanched and dipped in sauce, or mixed with various vegetables, today we’re introducing a unique way to prepare it: ‘Dotori Muk Jeon’ (Acorn Jelly Pancake). By slicing the acorn jelly, coating it thoroughly in pancake mix, then dipping it in a smooth egg batter and pan-frying until golden brown, you can reduce its natural astringency and enhance its wonderfully chewy texture. This is a simple yet delicious recipe, so let’s get started!
For the Acorn Jelly Pancake- 1 pack (300g) Acorn Jelly
- 2 Tbsp Pancake Mix
- 2 Eggs
- Pinch of Salt
- Cooking Oil, as needed
For the Acorn Jelly Dipping Sauce- 1/2 Red Chili Pepper
- 1 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 1/4 Tbsp Red Pepper Flakes
- 1 Tbsp Toasted Sesame Seeds
- 1 Tbsp Sesame Oil
- 2 Scallions
- 1/2 Red Chili Pepper
- 1 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 1/4 Tbsp Red Pepper Flakes
- 1 Tbsp Toasted Sesame Seeds
- 1 Tbsp Sesame Oil
- 2 Scallions
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, gently rinse the acorn jelly under running water. Since we’ll be coating it with pancake mix later, it’s best if the jelly’s surface is not too wet. Pat it dry thoroughly with paper towels to remove excess moisture, ensuring the pancake mix adheres well.
Step 2
We’re making pancakes, so slice the acorn jelly a bit thicker than you normally would for eating plain. This will give it a more substantial and satisfying texture when fried.
Step 3
In a large bowl, place the 2 tablespoons of pancake mix. Add the sliced acorn jelly and gently toss to ensure each piece is evenly coated with the mix. Don’t worry if there’s a little excess powder; it will fall off.
Step 4
In a separate bowl, crack the 2 eggs. Add a tiny pinch of salt to enhance the flavor. Whisk them well with a fork until the yolks and whites are fully combined, creating a smooth egg batter.
Step 5
Now, take the acorn jelly coated in pancake mix and dip each piece into the egg batter. Make sure each piece is fully submerged and well-coated with the egg. This coating will help the pancake fry up beautifully.
Step 6
Heat a frying pan over medium heat and add a moderate amount of cooking oil. You don’t need a lot of oil for acorn jelly pancakes. Just enough to ensure the egg coating cooks to a nice golden brown without sticking.
Step 7
Carefully place the egg-coated acorn jelly pieces onto the hot pan. Fry them on both sides until they are golden brown and slightly crispy. Your delicious acorn jelly pancakes are almost ready!
Step 8
Let’s prepare the dipping sauce to accompany the pancakes. Finely chop the red chili pepper and scallions after washing them thoroughly.
Step 9
In a small bowl, combine the chopped red chili pepper and scallions. Add 1 tablespoon of toasted sesame seeds for a nutty aroma, 1/4 tablespoon of red pepper flakes for a hint of spice, 1 tablespoon of soy sauce for savory depth, and 1 tablespoon of sesame oil for fragrance. Stir everything together with a spoon until well combined. Your flavorful acorn jelly dipping sauce is now complete.
Step 10
Arrange the beautifully fried acorn jelly pancakes on a serving plate. Spoon the prepared dipping sauce over the pancakes, or serve it on the side. Enjoy the delightful combination of crispy exterior and chewy interior! Bon appétit!
