Recreating the Famous Dongdaemun Yeopgi Tteokbokki at Home

Cheesy Tteokbokki: Dongdaemun Yeopgi Tteokbokki Style

Tteokbokki is a dish our family absolutely adores, and this Dongdaemun Yeopgi Tteokbokki inspired version is our absolute favorite! We’ve tried our best to replicate its signature taste at home, which means MSG is essential for that authentic flavor. We’ve focused on using the minimal amount to achieve a close flavor profile. The best part? You don’t need to boil a separate broth; the flavor comes through beautifully on its own! ♥ It’s a perfect balance of spicy and sweet, with chewy rice cakes and gooey melted cheese.

Main Ingredients

  • 500g Tteokbokki rice cakes (use soft, chewy ones)
  • 2 sheets of fish cakes (cut into bite-sized pieces)
  • 2 leaves of cabbage (cut into large pieces to add sweetness)
  • 1/2 stalk of green onion (sliced diagonally)
  • 100g Mozzarella cheese (adjust to your preference)
  • 10 Vienna sausages (lightly score them for better texture)

Seasoning

  • 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1/4 tsp Black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Beef soup stock powder (for umami)
  • 1/4 tsp Anchovy soup stock powder (for depth of flavor)
  • 1/4 tsp MSG (the secret to Dongdaemun Yeopgi Tteokbokki’s taste!)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

In a wide pot or pan, combine about 3-4 cups (approx. 500-600ml) of water with all the seasoning ingredients: Gochujang, black pepper, beef soup stock powder, anchovy soup stock powder, and MSG. Stir well with a spoon to dissolve the paste and powders completely. Mixing the sauce beforehand ensures the flavors blend smoothly as it cooks, preventing clumps.

Step 1

Step 2

Add the tteokbokki rice cakes, cut fish cakes, cabbage, and Vienna sausages to the dissolved sauce. Bring to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and simmer for about 10 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent the rice cakes from sticking to the bottom of the pot. The cabbage will release its sweetness, enhancing the sauce’s flavor.

Step 2

Step 3

When the rice cakes are tender and the sauce has thickened slightly, add the diagonally sliced green onions and simmer for another minute. While the tteokbokki is finishing, melt the mozzarella cheese in a microwave for 1-2 minutes or gently over low heat in a separate pan. Once melted and gooey, generously top the finished tteokbokki with the cheese. Enjoy your delicious spicy and sweet cheesy tteokbokki! Feel free to add boiled eggs or ramen noodles for an even more satisfying meal.
