How to Make a Beautiful and Simple Lunchbox with Chard Wraps: Perfect for Picnics This Picnic Season
May is the season for picnics! We’ve prepared a visually appealing yet incredibly easy lunchbox. Even those with ‘clumsy hands’ can quickly assemble these chard wraps. They are so simple, so please give them a try!
Ingredients- 10 Chard leaves
- 1 can Tuna (spicy flavor)
- 3-4 Tbsp Mayonnaise
- 1 bowl Steamed Rice
- Pinch of Salt
- Pinch of Sesame Seeds and Sesame Oil
- Vienna Sausages (as needed)
- Cherry Tomatoes
- 1 Egg
- Cheese slices or cubes (optional)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
At first glance, this lunchbox might look impressive, but it’s surprisingly simple when you look closer. The key to a captivating lunchbox lies in strategically mixing primary colors like green, red, white, and yellow. This color coordination makes even a casually packed lunchbox eye-catching.
Step 2
The more colorful and varied your ingredients are, the more appealing your lunchbox will be. Cute picks in different shapes and small divider dishes are essential for creating a pretty lunchbox. It’s also best to use a bento box that is wide and open rather than one with fixed, narrow compartments.
Step 3
Blanch the chard leaves in boiling water for about 20 seconds, then rinse under cold water and gently squeeze out any excess moisture. Mix the spicy tuna with mayonnaise, adjusting the amount to your taste and seasoning with salt. Step 4
To make the charming egg flower, first thinly pan-fry an egg omelet. Cut the omelet into squares, then fold each square in half. Now, using scissors, make cuts halfway up from the folded edge to create petal shapes.
Step 5
Gently roll up the omelet squares starting from the uncut bottom edge. Secure the rolled ‘flower’ by piercing it through the center with a small skewer or a piece of cooked vermicelli noodle to keep it from unraveling.
Step 6
Season the warm steamed rice with a pinch of salt, and mix in sesame seeds and sesame oil for flavor. Place a spoonful of the spicy tuna-mayo mixture into the seasoned rice, then roll it into compact balls. Finally, wrap each rice ball with a prepared chard leaf to create delicious chard wraps.
Step 7
Once blanched, chard leaves become pliable and adhere well to rice, making them very easy to work with for wraps. They are a wonderful vegetable choice for lunchboxes because they hold their shape well and offer a tender texture.
Step 8
When packing the lunchbox, start by placing the largest items, such as the rice wraps, firmly into the container. Then, fill any empty spaces between the main items with your decorative elements like the egg flowers or sausage flowers.
Step 9
To make the sausage flowers, cut Vienna sausages in half lengthwise. Then, make several parallel cuts across the width, and also vertically, resembling a pizza cut. Blanch the prepared sausages in boiling water for about 30 seconds until they open up like flowers.
Step 10
Cut the semi-circular pickled radish (danmuji) in half, then slice them diagonally for easy handling. For cherry tomatoes and string cheese, insert a small decorative pick into each one. This small touch makes the presentation look more thoughtful and special.
Step 11
To prevent the contents from shifting, fill any remaining gaps with fruits or sausages. After packing everything, gently shake the lunchbox from side to side to ensure all the items are securely in place and won’t move around during transport.
Step 12
The spicy tuna-mayo chard wraps are not only easy to make but also offer a refreshing, slightly spicy flavor that stimulates the appetite. They are much simpler to assemble than kimbap and are a great alternative for warmer weather, as they stay fresh longer than many other picnic foods.
