Aromatic Homemade Orange Vinegar
Homemade Vinegar Made with Fresh Oranges
Following up on our popular lemon vinegar, try making this homemade vinegar infused with the sweet and rich flavor of oranges. It’s versatile for salad dressings, various dishes, and beverages.
Main Ingredients- 1 Orange
- 260ml Vinegar (Apple cider vinegar or brown rice vinegar recommended)
- 2 Tbsp Baking Soda
Additional Ingredients- 0.7 tsp Sugar (adjust to taste)
- 0.7 tsp Sugar (adjust to taste)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare one orange. Dissolve 1 tablespoon of baking soda in 260ml of vinegar. Then, soak the orange in this solution for about 10 minutes. This helps remove any residual pesticides or impurities from the orange peel.
Step 2
Take the soaked orange out and use the remaining 1 tablespoon of baking soda to gently rub its surface with your hands. As you scrub the peel thoroughly, you’ll hear a squeaky sound, which indicates the orange is being cleaned effectively.
Step 3
Rinse the thoroughly scrubbed orange under running water multiple times to completely remove any baking soda residue. Pat the orange dry with a paper towel.
Step 4
Cut the dried orange in half and then slice it thinly, about 5mm thick. It’s best to remove any seeds if present. Thin slices allow the orange’s aroma to infuse better into the vinegar.
Step 5
Pour the prepared 260ml of vinegar into a clean glass jar or container. Arrange the sliced orange pieces inside the container.
Step 6
Next, add 0.7 teaspoon of sugar. Sugar helps to slightly balance the orange’s tartness and enhances its flavor. Feel free to adjust the amount if you prefer a sweeter taste.
Step 7
Close the lid tightly and let it age at cool room temperature, away from direct sunlight, for 2 weeks. Over time, the fragrant essence of the orange will gradually infuse into the vinegar.
Step 8
During the aging period, shake the container gently or stir the contents once every 4 days. This helps ensure the orange’s flavor and aroma infuse evenly. After 2 weeks, remove the orange slices and store the finished orange vinegar in a sealed bottle in the refrigerator.
