Aromatic and Nutty Homemade Corn Tea
Brewing Healthy Corn Tea at Home: A Simple and Perfect Recipe
Do you have corn languishing in your freezer? Or perhaps you bought too much fresh corn and are wondering what to do with it? This is the perfect opportunity to make delicious corn tea! By toasting the corn yourself, you can achieve a deep, nutty flavor that rivals store-bought versions. As the cooler weather approaches, embrace a warm cup of corn tea for both health and taste. I’ll share tips on how to use dried corn for convenience or how to make it work perfectly with fresh corn!
Corn Tea Ingredients- 3-4 cooked corn cobs (kernels removed)
- 2 liters (about 8 cups) of water
- Barley tea bag or roasted barley (optional)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare 3-4 cooked corn cobs. Steamed or boiled corn will both work well. Carefully remove all the kernels from the cobs using a knife or tool. The corn cobs themselves are not used in this recipe, so you can set them aside or discard them.
Step 2
Now it’s time to toast the corn kernels. Heat a dry skillet or pan over medium-low heat. Once the pan is sufficiently warm, add all the removed corn kernels and begin to toast them. It’s important not to add any oil for this step.
Step 3
You’ll hear the corn kernels start to sizzle and pop as they hit the hot pan. Continue to toast them, stirring occasionally, for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until the moisture evaporates and the kernels become slightly crisp. Use a spatula or spoon to ensure they toast evenly. Avoid using high heat, as this can cause them to burn; maintaining medium-low heat is key.
Step 4
As you toast, a rich, nutty aroma will fill your kitchen. The kernels will gradually develop a delightful roasted scent. They are perfectly toasted when they start to turn a light brown color and feel firm and crisp to the touch. This indicates that the moisture has been fully removed, bringing out the unique flavor of roasted corn.
Step 5
While the corn toasted at home might not be as hard as commercially dried corn, this toasting process is sufficient to create wonderfully flavorful corn tea. Let the freshly toasted corn cool down a bit; it will become even crispier as it cools.
Step 6
Now, it’s time to infuse the tea. Bring 2 liters of water to a boil. Once boiling, add half of the toasted corn kernels to the pot. (You can add the remaining half later or use it all if you prefer a stronger flavor.) Reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer gently for 10 to 15 minutes, allowing the nutty flavor and aroma of the corn to fully infuse into the water.
Step 7
When the time is up, your aromatic homemade corn tea will be ready! Simply strain the tea and serve it warm. For an even deeper flavor profile, you can add a barley tea bag or a handful of roasted barley along with the corn while simmering. Enjoy this healthy and delicious beverage throughout the day as a refreshing alternative to water!
