Almond Butter Dried Squids
Easy Beer Snack! Hong Jinmichae (Dried Red Squids) with Honey Butter and Almond Butter Squids
This is a buttered squid that rivals the ones you get at the movie theater! It’s sweet and nutty, with a flavor so addictive that once you start, you can’t stop. It’s perfect for movie nights or as a quick snack.
Ingredients- 130g Dried Red Squids (Hong Jinmichae)
- 20g Sliced Almonds
- 2 slices Butter (approx. 30g)
- 1 Tbsp Peanut Butter
- 2 Tbsp Corn Syrup (or Honey)
- Pinch of Black Pepper
- Pinch of Parsley Flakes (optional)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, gather all your ingredients. Ensure you have the correct amount of dried red squids and sliced almonds. Having your butter, peanut butter, corn syrup, pepper, and parsley flakes measured out will make the cooking process much smoother.
Step 2
Prepare the dried red squids. Briefly rinse them under cool or lukewarm water to remove excess salt. Then, drain them well on a colander to let excess moisture drip off. This step helps prevent the squids from becoming too salty and allows them to absorb the sauce better.
Step 3
Now, let’s make the delicious sauce. Melt the butter slices in a heated pan over medium-low heat. Once the butter is fully melted, add the peanut butter and corn syrup. Stir vigorously with a spatula or chopsticks until the peanut butter is smoothly incorporated and the sauce is uniform. It’s crucial to stir well to prevent lumps of peanut butter.
Step 4
It’s time to add the prepared dried squids to the pan. If the squids are long, cut them into bite-sized pieces (about 5-7 cm) with scissors. This makes it easier for the sauce to coat them and for eating. Add the cut squids to the sauce in the pan.
Step 5
Stir-fry the squids until they are evenly coated with the delicious sauce. Cook over medium-low heat for about 1 minute. The key is to stir until the squids are moist and glossy, having absorbed the sauce well. Be careful not to overcook, as this can make the squids tough.
Step 6
Turn off the heat and add the sliced almonds for an extra nutty crunch. Use the residual heat of the pan to gently toss the almonds with the squids, ensuring they don’t burn. The crispy texture of the almonds combined with the chewy squid creates a wonderfully satisfying mouthfeel.
Step 7
Optionally, sprinkle a pinch of black pepper. The slightly pungent aroma of the pepper complements the sweet and nutty flavors, enhancing the overall taste profile.
Step 8
Give everything a final gentle toss, and your delicious Almond Butter Dried Squids are ready! They are delicious served warm, but also have a wonderfully chewy texture when cooled. We highly recommend this as a perfect beer snack!
