Basic Ingredients- 1 packet of pre-made hotteok mix
- 180ml lukewarm water (approx. 1 cup by standard Korean paper cup)
- A little cooking oil (optional, for brushing or lining the basket)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Check for the dried yeast packet included with the hotteok mix.
Step 2
Place the confirmed yeast into a clean mixing bowl.
Step 3
Pour in 180ml of lukewarm water and stir well until the yeast is completely dissolved. (To achieve the ideal water temperature, mix 2/3 cup of cold water with 1/3 cup of boiled water. It should feel comfortably warm when you dip your finger in.)
Step 4
Add the hotteok mix powder to the dissolved yeast water. Using a spatula or your hands, knead the dough for about 5 minutes until it becomes elastic and slightly sticky. Adjust consistency by adding a little flour if too wet, or a bit more water if too dry.
Step 5
For the sweet filling, sift the included sugar filling mix through a fine-mesh sieve, discarding or separating the larger peanut pieces. (Coarse peanut chunks can cause the dough to tear when flattened.)
Step 6
Divide the prepared dough into approximately 3-4 portions, depending on your desired hotteok size.
Step 7
Take one portion of dough and flatten it gently with your palm. Fill it generously with about 1 tablespoon of the prepared sugar filling. Carefully pinch the edges of the dough together to seal the filling inside, ensuring it won’t leak. Then, roll it into a round shape.
Step 8
Place the shaped hotteok dough on a cutting board. Using a rolling pin or a similar tool, gently and evenly flatten the dough. Be careful not to press too hard, as this can cause the filling to burst out.
Step 9
Line your air fryer basket with parchment paper and place the flattened hotteok on top. Air fry at 180°C (350°F) for 15 minutes for the first cook. (If your air fryer is preheated, reduce the time to about 10-12 minutes. Smaller air fryers might require cooking one hotteok at a time, which can take longer overall.)
Step 10
After the initial cooking, you can sprinkle the sifted peanut pieces (from step 4) on top of the hotteok for an extra nutty flavor and texture. Baking it further with the peanuts is also delicious.
Step 11
The finished air fryer hotteok is delicious as is. This method results in a crispy exterior, a warm and sweet interior, and a soft, fluffy texture on the other side. For an even crispier finish all around, flip the hotteok and air fry for an additional 5 minutes at 180°C (350°F). This will puff up the hotteok significantly, creating a unique, airy texture similar to a ‘gongalppang’ (hollow bread).
