- Sugar (to taste)
- Ketchup
- Mustard
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, briefly blanch the Vienna sausages in boiling water for about 30 seconds. This helps to remove excess oil from the sausage surface and allows the hot dog batter to adhere better. Be careful not to boil them for too long, as they might burst.
Step 2
Drain the blanched Vienna sausages on a sieve and ensure they are completely dry. Any remaining moisture can make the batter watery or cause oil splattering during frying.
Step 3
Now, let’s make the hot dog batter. In a bowl, combine 200g of pancake mix, 1 egg, and 1/2 cup of milk. Since pancake mix typically contains sugar and leavening agents, you can create a delicious batter without adding extra ingredients.
Step 4
Mix the batter using a whisk or spatula until it’s smooth and lump-free. The batter should have a consistency that’s neither too thick nor too thin – it should flow off a spoon naturally. If the batter is too thick, add a little more milk; if it’s too thin, add a small amount of pancake mix to adjust the consistency.
Step 5
Insert a skewer or toothpick firmly into the center of each dried Vienna sausage. Ensure the skewer goes in securely so the hot dogs are stable when dipping in batter and frying.
Step 6
Dip each skewered sausage into the prepared hot dog batter, coating it evenly on all sides. Aim for a thin, consistent layer of batter.
Step 7
Immediately after coating with batter, roll the sausage in breadcrumbs, ensuring it’s fully covered. A thorough coating of breadcrumbs will result in a crispier texture after frying.
Step 8
Heat cooking oil in a deep pan or pot to 170°C (340°F). To test the oil temperature, drop a tiny bit of batter into the oil; it should sizzle and float to the surface immediately. Carefully place the battered hot dogs into the hot oil. Avoid overcrowding the pan, as this can lower the oil temperature. Fry in batches of 2-3.
Step 9
Fry the hot dogs for about 2-3 minutes, or until they turn a beautiful golden brown color. Turning them occasionally will ensure even cooking. Once golden brown, remove them from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
Step 10
For an extra touch of sweetness, lightly sprinkle sugar over the fried hot dogs once they’ve cooled slightly, or roll them in sugar. This will make them even more appealing to kids.
Step 11
And there you have it – delicious mini hot dogs! Serve them warm with your favorite ketchup or mustard to your liking. Enjoy this special snack time with your little ones!
