Ingredients

  • 1 pack Pre-portioned Salted Mackerel
  • 1/2 Tbsp Cooking Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Parsley Flakes

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Choosing fresh mackerel is key. I often buy frozen, pre-portioned mackerel from Chinese supermarkets, which are surprisingly affordable. Despite the journey, they have no fishy smell or taste, making them ideal for quick side dishes. Rinse the mackerel under cold water and pat it dry thoroughly. Then, make 3-4 shallow cuts on the flesh side of each fillet. That’s all the prep needed before we start cooking – it’s truly that simple!

Step 1

Step 2

Line the air fryer basket with aluminum foil. This is a game-changer for cleanup; you can just discard the foil after cooking! To further minimize splattering oil, smoke, and odors, we’ll cover the fish with foil during cooking. This method ensures perfectly browned mackerel while keeping your kitchen fresh and clean.

Step 2

Step 3

Place the prepared mackerel fillets in the air fryer basket with the skin side facing up. Then, lightly drizzle about 1/2 tablespoon of cooking oil over the flesh side. Since the heating element is usually at the top, the upper side tends to cook faster. Placing the skin side up helps achieve a crispier skin. Finally, cover the fish loosely with another layer of aluminum foil.

Step 3

Step 4

This cooking time is perfected from frequent use! Set your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) and cook for 15 minutes. This duration ensures the mackerel is cooked through, with a crispy exterior and a moist, tender interior. Please note that this is for when you cover the top with foil; if you cook without the foil cover, reduce the cooking time to around 10 minutes to prevent overcooking.

Step 4

Step 5

After the 15 minutes are up, carefully open the air fryer to check on the mackerel. If you’re cooking two or three fillets at once, you’ll need to extend the cooking time by an additional 2-3 minutes to ensure they are cooked evenly.

Step 5

Step 6

Voilà! After 15 minutes, the mackerel is beautifully golden brown and perfectly cooked. I prefer it at this stage, so I’m finishing here. Transfer the grilled mackerel to a serving plate and sprinkle a little parsley flakes on top for a lovely presentation. Your delicious dish is ready!

Step 6

Step 7

The skin is wonderfully crisp and golden, while the flesh inside remains incredibly moist and tender. The best part is enjoying this fantastic grilled mackerel at home without any lingering cooking smells or smoke. I highly recommend giving this method a try!
