Tanghulu Ingredients- 10 fresh strawberries (washed and prepped)
- 1 orange (peeled and segmented)
Crispy Tanghulu Syrup- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (approx. 100g)
- 1/4 cup water (approx. 60ml)
- 1/4 cup corn syrup (approx. 60ml, helps achieve the perfect chewy-crisp texture!)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (approx. 100g)
- 1/4 cup water (approx. 60ml)
- 1/4 cup corn syrup (approx. 60ml, helps achieve the perfect chewy-crisp texture!)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Begin by gently washing the fresh strawberries under running water. Ensure they are completely dry. Carefully remove the stems without damaging the fruit. Thread 2-3 strawberries onto each skewer. For the orange, carefully peel it, then divide the segments in half, being mindful not to break them apart.
Step 2
In a small saucepan, combine the syrup ingredients: granulated sugar, water, and corn syrup. Start heating over medium-low heat and stir until the sugar dissolves. Once the syrup begins to boil, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer until it thickens to a syrupy consistency. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
Step 3
To test if the syrup is ready, carefully drop a small amount into a glass of ice-cold water. If it hardens quickly and breaks cleanly when you touch it (making a distinct ‘snap’ sound), it’s perfect! If the syrup is too thin, it won’t coat the fruit properly, and if it’s overcooked, it can burn. Timing is key here!
Step 4
Once the syrup reaches the correct consistency, immediately remove the saucepan from the heat. While the syrup is still hot and liquid, quickly dip and rotate each fruit skewer to evenly coat the fruit with a thin layer of syrup. Work swiftly to ensure a smooth coating before the syrup starts to set. Place the coated tanghulu on parchment paper and refrigerate for about 20 minutes to allow the syrup to harden completely.
Step 5
After chilling, check that the Tanghulu’s candy coating is firm. Arrange the hardened Tanghulu attractively on a serving plate. If you used parchment paper, carefully peel the Tanghulu off the paper, making sure not to break the delicate sugar shells. Enjoy your homemade sweet and fruity treat! This is a fun activity to do with children.
