- 2 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste, generously packed)
- 1 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes, for color and spice)
- 2 Tbsp sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1 Tbsp soy sauce (for umami depth)
- 1.5 Tbsp curry powder (this is the secret to the tteokbokki flavor!)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s make the special sauce for delicious tteokbokki. In a large bowl, combine 2 Tbsp gochujang, 1 Tbsp gochugaru, 2 Tbsp sugar, 1 Tbsp soy sauce, and the secret weapon of this recipe: 1.5 Tbsp curry powder. Stir well with a spoon until all ingredients are thoroughly mixed to create the sauce.
Step 2
Now, let’s prepare the base broth for the tteokbokki. Pour 300ml of clean water into a pot. You can slightly adjust the water amount depending on the type of rice cakes or your desired sauce consistency.
Step 3
Add all the prepared sauce to the water in the pot and stir gently with a spoon or whisk until smooth and lump-free. Ensuring the water and sauce are well combined will help the seasoning evenly coat the rice cakes.
Step 4
Place the pot with the sauce mixture over medium heat and bring to a boil. Once the water is simmering, add 300g of tteokbokki rice cakes that have been rinsed clean. Give it a stir to prevent the cakes from sticking together.
Step 5
When the rice cakes have become soft and the sauce has started to thicken slightly, add the 3 sheets of square fish cakes that have been cut into bite-sized pieces. Adding the fish cakes after the rice cakes are partially cooked prevents them from becoming too mushy and maintains a pleasant texture.
Step 6
Check if the rice cakes and fish cakes are tender. Finally, sprinkle in about 1/2 tsp of black pepper. Black pepper helps to remove any unwanted odors and enhances the overall flavor of the tteokbokki.
Step 7
Lastly, add the roughly chopped green onions and simmer for another 2-3 minutes. Once the green onions are slightly wilted and the sauce has reduced to a desired consistency, your delicious tteokbokki is ready! It’s best enjoyed immediately while hot.
