Make Delicious Hotteok Right at Home!
On chilly winter nights, fill your belly and your heart with the delightful sweetness of homemade hotteok, fresh from the pan. This recipe is easy for anyone to follow.
Dough Ingredients- 200g Bread Flour (Strong Flour)
- 30g Corn Starch
- 2 Tbsp Olive Oil
- 4g Instant Dry Yeast
- 2g Salt
- 180g Lukewarm Water
- Vegetable Oil (for frying)
Hotteok Filling Ingredients- Sugar (to taste)
- Cinnamon Powder (to taste)
- Sugar (to taste)
- Cinnamon Powder (to taste)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
In a large bowl, add the instant dry yeast (4g) and a small amount of lukewarm water (180g). Stir gently to dissolve the yeast completely. Be careful not to use water that is too hot, as it can kill the yeast. Once the yeast is dissolved, add the bread flour (200g), corn starch (30g), and salt (2g). Mix with a spatula or your hands until a dough forms. It might seem a bit sticky at first, and that’s okay.
Step 2
Bring water to a boil in a pot, then turn off the heat. Place the bowl with the dough onto a steamer rack above the hot water, cover with a lid, and let it steam for 15 minutes. This gentle steaming will help the dough rise and become wonderfully soft and chewy.
Step 3
After 15 minutes, remove the risen dough from the steamer. Add the olive oil (2 Tbsp) to the dough and knead it with your hands until the oil is fully incorporated. The olive oil will make the dough smoother and easier to handle.
Step 4
Divide the dough into portions about the size of an egg (around 50-60g each). Flatten each portion into a disc shape using your palm. Spoon your desired amount of sugar and cinnamon powder into the center of the flattened dough. Carefully gather the edges of the dough to enclose the filling, creating a round hotteok shape. Ensure the filling is completely sealed to prevent it from leaking out during cooking.
Step 5
Heat a generous amount of vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Place the shaped hotteok dough onto the hot pan. If you don’t have a hotteok press, use the back of a spatula or the bottom of a bowl to gently press down on the hotteok as it cooks. Press down firmly but carefully to avoid breaking the hotteok.
Step 6
Cook over medium-low heat, flipping occasionally, until both sides of the hotteok are golden brown and slightly crispy. Be cautious when flipping, as the melted sugar filling can be very hot. Your delicious hotteok is now ready to be enjoyed!
