- 1 handful Green Onion (chopped)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Hello everyone! Today, we’re going to make a delicious braised tofu, a beloved classic side dish. It’s simple yet incredibly satisfying and pairs perfectly with rice.
Step 2
First, it’s crucial to remove excess water from the tofu. Wrap the block of tofu in paper towels or place it in a colander and press gently for about 5-10 minutes. This step helps prevent the tofu from breaking apart during cooking and allows it to absorb the sauce more effectively, enhancing its flavor.
Step 3
Once the water is drained, cut the tofu into bite-sized pieces, about 2-3 cm thick. Now, lightly oil a pan and pan-fry the tofu slices until they are golden brown on both sides over medium-low heat. Frying slowly helps achieve a crispy exterior and a tender interior, while also preventing the tofu from crumbling and adding a savory depth of flavor.
Step 4
While the tofu is frying, let’s prepare the delicious seasoning sauce. In a small bowl, combine 1 tsp minced garlic, 2 Tbsp soy sauce, 1/2 cup water, 3 tsp gochugaru, a pinch of black pepper, 1 tsp sugar, 1 tsp oligodang (or corn syrup), and a pinch of sesame seeds. Mix everything well. Feel free to adjust the amount of soy sauce to your preference, or add finely chopped chili peppers for extra spice.
Step 5
Once the tofu pieces are beautifully golden brown on both sides, push them to one side of the pan. Pour the prepared seasoning sauce over the fried tofu. Reduce the heat to low, and let it simmer for about 5-7 minutes, spooning the sauce over the tofu occasionally. This allows the sauce to penetrate the tofu deeply. Gently shake the pan or use a spatula to ladle the sauce over the tofu as it simmers. Finally, stir in 1 tsp of sesame oil and the chopped green onions, and simmer for another minute to infuse the aroma.
Step 6
And there you have it – a delicious and perfectly braised tofu! It’s absolutely wonderful served over a bowl of warm rice. Make your dinner table more delightful tonight with this simple yet satisfying braised tofu.
