Its sophisticated blend of fig sweetness and subtle wine notes adds a touch of luxury to any occasion.
Ingredients- 10 ripe figs
- 1/2 onion
- 200ml dry red wine
- 1 tsp cinnamon powder
- 1 tbsp monk fruit sweetener (or allulose as an alternative)
- 1/4 tsp grated fresh ginger (optional)
- 2 whole cloves (optional)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Begin by preparing your ripe figs. Wash them thoroughly under running water, then cut them into 2-4 pieces depending on their size. If the seeds are particularly large or firm, cutting them into larger chunks will help them soften beautifully during the simmering process.
Step 2
Peel the onion, rinse it, and then finely mince it. Finely mincing the onion will help it integrate smoothly into the compote, adding a subtle depth of flavor without being chunky.
Step 3
Now, get your saucepan ready. Add the minced onion and the prepared figs to the pot. Pour in 200ml of dry red wine – opt for a wine that isn’t too sweet to enhance the figs’ natural flavor without overpowering it.
Step 4
Add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder to further enhance the beautiful harmony between the figs and the wine. Cinnamon will elevate the compote’s flavor profile, lending an elegant and warm aroma.
Step 5
For a touch of spicy complexity, consider adding about 1/4 teaspoon of grated fresh ginger. If you have whole cloves, adding two can impart an even deeper, more sophisticated fragrance to the compote. (Use cloves sparingly as their flavor is quite potent.)
Step 6
Place the pot over low heat and let it simmer gently. Initially, bring it to a boil over medium heat, then reduce to low. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and allow the figs to break down while the liquid reduces to a syrupy consistency. This process typically takes about 15-20 minutes. Avoid over-stirring to keep some fig texture intact.
Step 7
If you’ve added whole cloves, carefully remove them just before the compote is finished cooking. While cloves add a wonderful aroma, they can be unpleasant to bite into, so be sure to fish them out for a smooth eating experience. Remove from heat once the compote reaches your desired syrupy thickness.
Step 8
This fig and red wine compote can be enjoyed warm as is. Alternatively, let it cool completely, then blend it into a smooth puree. A pureed compote is perfect for spreading on toast or using as a topping for ice cream. Once cooled, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1-2 weeks.
