Ryoo Soo-young's Spam Bowl: A Simple and Delicious One-Bowl Meal

I decided to make this Spam Bowl recipe from ‘Convenience Store Restaurant’ (Pyeonstorang) by Ryoo Soo-young, as I had a surplus of Spam at home. The ingredients are simple, and the taste is surprisingly good! The idea of using half the Spam for a rice bowl and the other half for pasta is brilliant. The crispy fried Spam combined with the savory sauce creates a truly satisfying meal. While it’s a bit of a calorie bomb, it’s perfect for a delicious treat when you don’t want a complicated cooking process. This recipe is especially recommended for beginner cooks and those living alone due to its simplicity. The addictive, flavorful Spam, with its delightful texture, will leave you craving more. Let’s get started on making this delicious Spam Bowl! (Measurement guide: 1 Tbsp = 15ml, 1 tsp = 5ml, 1 Cup = 200ml)

  • 1 Tbsp Sugar

  • 2 rounds (approx. 2 Tbsp) Cooking Oil

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Hello everyone! Today, I’m sharing a simple yet incredibly addictive Spam Bowl recipe. The ingredients are minimal, making it easy for anyone to follow.

Step 1

Step 2

First, let’s prepare the Spam. While Chef Ryoo Soo-young used it directly, I like to blanch it briefly in boiling water to remove any potential unwanted odors. I’m using 100g of Spam, which is about one-third of a standard can. Finely dice half an onion.

Step 2

Step 3

Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat and add about 2 tablespoons (2 rounds) of cooking oil. Add the Spam and stir-fry until it becomes slightly crispy and develops a nice golden-brown color. This process will mellow the saltiness and enhance its flavor.

Step 3

Step 4

Once the Spam is becoming crispy and has a golden hue, reduce the heat to medium. Now, add 1 tablespoon of minced garlic and the finely diced onion. Sauté everything together until the garlic is fragrant and the onion becomes translucent.

Step 4

Step 5

When the Spam and onion are well combined and sautéed, lower the heat to low. Add 1 tablespoon of sugar and stir well to coat all the ingredients evenly. This step will help caramelize the onions, adding a deeper sweetness. Once the sugar is incorporated, pour 2 tablespoons of soy sauce around the edges of the pan. Let it sizzle and slightly caramelize, which will further deepen the flavor.

Step 5

Step 6

And there you have it – a simple and delicious sauce for your rice bowl! This flavorful Spam mixture will make a fantastic meal when served over rice. #덮밥소스 (Rice Bowl Sauce)

Step 6

Step 7

Now, place half a bowl of cooked rice into a serving bowl. Top generously with the delicious stir-fried Spam mixture. Finally, carefully place a fresh egg yolk right in the center for a beautiful finish.

Step 7

Step 8

To complete the dish, sprinkle a generous amount of seaweed flakes over the top, followed by a scattering of sesame seeds. Your Spam Bowl is now ready to be enjoyed!

Step 8

Step 9

To be honest, I found it a little salty for my personal taste, so I added a bit more rice to balance it out. This is a fantastic dish to make when you don’t have many side dishes available or when you want a quick, satisfying meal for one. However, the taste is so addictive that I keep thinking about it.

Step 9

Step 10

The best part is breaking the egg yolk and mixing it all together with the rice and savory Spam! The addition of seaweed flakes makes it wonderfully savory and slightly sweet. I highly recommend you try making this if you get the chance. You’ll surely devour this delicious bowl in no time!
