Main Ingredients

  • Laver (Para-e), 1 large clump (approx. 160g)
  • Dried shrimp, 3 Tbsp
  • Egg, 1 large
  • Pancake mix (Buchim garu), 5 Tbsp
  • Water, 100ml
  • Red chili pepper, 1/2 (seeds removed)
  • Green chili pepper, 1/2 (seeds removed)

For Seasoning Laver

  • Coarse sea salt, 1/2 Tbsp

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Begin by gently separating the clumped laver with your hands. Add 1/2 Tbsp of coarse sea salt and gently knead the laver. This step not only seasons the laver but also helps to reduce any slight bitterness and enhances its overall flavor.

Step 1

Step 2

Rinse the seasoned laver under running water, using your hands to further break it apart and thoroughly wash away any impurities or fishy odors. After rinsing multiple times, drain the laver in a sieve. Squeeze out as much excess water as possible by hand. Finally, cut the laver into bite-sized pieces, about 3-4 cm wide, using kitchen scissors.

Step 2

Step 3

Finely chop the red and green chili peppers. You can adjust the amount of green chili pepper for more heat or use only red chili pepper for a milder, sweeter flavor. The chili peppers add a wonderful aroma and a touch of freshness to the pancake.

Step 3

Step 4

In a large bowl, combine the prepared laver, 1 egg, 5 Tbsp of pancake mix, 3 Tbsp of dried shrimp, and 100ml of water. Mix everything together thoroughly with a spoon or your hands until no lumps of laver remain and the dry powder is fully incorporated. Ensure there are no visible dry spots of flour for a consistent batter. The dried shrimp will add a delightful nutty flavor and a pleasant chewiness.

Step 4

Step 5

Now, let’s cook the delicious laver pancake! Heat a frying pan over medium-low heat and add a generous amount of cooking oil. Spoon portions of the laver batter onto the hot pan, forming pancakes of your desired size (about 10-12 cm in diameter). Cook each side for approximately 3-4 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Flip them carefully to ensure even cooking. Serve hot for the best taste!
