I bought live shore shrimp (soks) from Seosan Dongmun Market and made steamed soks along with a flavorful seafood ramen. I love Seosan Market because it’s close to the sea, offering fresh seafood. Shore shrimp, also known as mantis shrimp, are in season from April to May, but they’re hard to find in the city. Just like their name suggests, when you peel the flesh, it tastes like lobster! While the shells are tough and sharp, making them a bit tricky to peel, the sweet flavor and firm texture are just as delicious as crab or lobster. Since it’s their season, I quickly bought them when I saw them live. They were also selling just crab legs nearby, so I bought those too for an even richer dish.

Steamed Soks & Ramen Ingredients

  • 20 live shore shrimp (soks)
  • 20 crab legs
  • 500ml water
  • 1 Tbsp doenjang (soybean paste)
  • 1/2 cup soju

Shore Shrimp Seafood Ramen Ingredients

  • 4 shore shrimp (soks)
  • 3 crab legs
  • 2 packs of instant ramen
  • 800ml water

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, wash the shore shrimp (soks) and crab legs thoroughly under running water. After washing, place them in a colander to drain any excess water.

Bring 500ml of water to a boil in a pot. Once boiling, add 1 tablespoon of doenjang (soybean paste) and 1/2 cup of soju. The doenjang helps season the shrimp and crab and also removes any fishy odors. Place the prepared shore shrimp and crab legs in a steamer basket, cover, and steam for 10 minutes until cooked.

After 10 minutes, the shore shrimp and crab legs have turned a beautiful, appetizing red color and are perfectly cooked. You’re now ready to enjoy delicious steamed soks!

The shells of the shore shrimp (soks) are quite sharp and tough, so be careful when eating them. First, cut off the head and tail. Then, carefully trim the sharp shells from both sides. This will make it easier to peel off the outer shell and enjoy the succulent meat inside.

Now, let’s make the shore shrimp seafood ramen! Pour 800ml of water into a pot and bring it to a boil. Once the water is boiling, add a few shore shrimp and crab legs first, followed by the 2 packs of instant ramen and their soup base. Cook everything together.
