A Flavorful Dinner Option: Spicy and Sweet Stir-fried Squid
Beat the heat with some spice! This stir-fried squid is perfect for a satisfyingly spicy meal that will make you break a sweat and feel refreshed. It’s an excellent side dish that pairs wonderfully with rice.
Main Ingredients- 2 squid (cleaned)
- 2 stalks green onion
- 3 Korean red chili peppers (Cheongyang peppers)
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- A portion of 1/4 cabbage
- 1/4 onion
Seasoning Ingredients- 3 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 2 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1 tsp oyster sauce
- 1 tsp sugar
- 2 Tbsp cooking oil
- 1 Tbsp perilla oil
- A pinch of sesame seeds
- 3 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 2 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1 tsp oyster sauce
- 1 tsp sugar
- 2 Tbsp cooking oil
- 1 Tbsp perilla oil
- A pinch of sesame seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, heat a pan over medium-low heat and add 2 Tbsp of cooking oil and 1 Tbsp of perilla oil. Mixing these oils enhances the aroma significantly. Add the chopped green onions and sauté until they release their fragrance and turn a light brown color, creating a fragrant green onion oil.
Step 2
Once the green onions are nicely browned, add the prepared squid to the pan. Increase the heat to high and stir-fry quickly. Avoid overcooking the squid, as it can release excess moisture and become tough. Cook just until it turns opaque.
Step 3
When the squid is partially cooked and turning white, add 1 Tbsp of minced garlic. Stir-fry for about 30 seconds until the garlic is fragrant, being careful not to burn it. Adjust the heat if necessary.
Step 4
Next, add 3 Tbsp of gochujang. Stir well to coat the squid and any vegetables with the chili paste. Continue to stir-fry, ensuring the gochujang doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan.
Step 5
Add 2 Tbsp of gochugaru and mix everything together. Taste the mixture. If it needs more flavor, add 1 tsp of oyster sauce for an extra umami boost. I found 1 tsp to be the perfect amount for seasoning.
Step 6
Finally, add the prepared cabbage, onion, and sliced Cheongyang peppers. Stir-fry quickly over high heat, just until the vegetables are slightly tender but still retain some crispness. Overcooking will make the vegetables soggy. Turn off the heat, sprinkle with sesame seeds, and serve hot with rice or as a side dish.
