Hamburger or Gimbap? Introducing the Unique ‘Folded Gimbap’
Here’s a recipe for ‘Folded Gimbap’ that you can easily whip up with ingredients you have at home when you don’t have much appetite. It’s layered like a hamburger for a satisfying meal!
Main Ingredients- 1 bowl of cooked rice (warm)
- Pinch of salt
- Pinch of sesame oil
- Pinch of sesame seeds
- 100g sliced ham
- 3 sheets of seaweed (gim)
- 3 eggs
- 1/2 cucumber
- 1/2 tomato
- 6 fresh lettuce leaves
- 3 slices of cheese
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the ham. Lightly oil a frying pan and pan-fry the ham slices until golden brown on both sides. Set the cooked ham aside on a plate to cool slightly.
Step 2
Now, let’s prepare the fresh vegetables. Wash the cucumber and tomato thoroughly, then slice them into bite-sized pieces, similar to hamburger patties. Slicing them relatively thick will enhance the texture.
Step 3
It’s time to make the egg omelet. Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in the frying pan, pour in the beaten eggs, and cook thinly. Flip and cook until golden brown on both sides. Once done, cut the egg omelet into pieces that will fit your seaweed sheets.
Step 4
Let’s season the rice, which is the base of our gimbap. In a bowl of warm rice, add a pinch of salt, a pinch of sesame oil, and some toasted sesame seeds. Gently mix everything together with a spatula or spoon, being careful not to mash the rice grains, until well combined. Adjust the seasoning to your taste.
Step 5
Gather all the filling ingredients. Have your pan-fried ham, sliced cucumber and tomato, cooked egg omelet, fresh lettuce leaves, and slices of cheese all ready. Your filling is now prepared!
Step 6
Now, prepare the seaweed sheets. To make folding easier without a bamboo mat, it’s convenient to use seaweed cut into thirds or quarters. Cut the seaweed sheets lengthwise (e.g., if using 4 sections, cut horizontally once and then vertically in half).
Step 7
It’s time to layer the fillings onto the seaweed. Spread the seaweed sheet flat. Start by placing a lettuce leaf, followed by cheese, egg omelet, ham, cucumber, and tomato, stacking them neatly. Crucially, place the seasoned rice on the very top. This ensures that the fillings are securely held together when you fold the seaweed.
Step 8
Once all the ingredients are layered on the seaweed, it’s time to fold! Gently lift the edge of the seaweed and fold it over the fillings. Continue folding upwards, stacking the ingredients like a hamburger. Once everything is covered, wrap the entire roll tightly with parchment paper or wax paper to help it hold its shape.
Step 9
Now, slice the folded gimbap in half for easy eating. Use a sharp knife for a clean cut. Place the halves on a plate, cut-side up, for an attractive presentation.
Step 10
Ta-da! Your ‘Folded Gimbap’ is complete – it looks like a hamburger and tastes like gimbap! It offers the freshness of a salad with the satisfying heartiness of gimbap. Enjoy a special meal with this delicious Folded Gimbap tonight!
