Today, I’ve made my youngest child’s favorite super simple stir-fried squid for breakfast. It’s convenient and delicious, making it a great choice for any meal!

Main Ingredients

  • 1 small squid
  • 1/3 stalk of green onion
  • 1-2 Korean green chili peppers (kkwari gochu)
  • 1 Tbsp cooking oil

Seasoning

  • 1/2 Tbsp cooking wine (mirin)
  • 1 tsp mild red chili powder (gochugaru)
  • 1 tsp oyster sauce

Cooking Instructions

First, prepare your ingredients. Remove the skin from the squid, rinse it thoroughly, and then cut it into bite-sized pieces. Slice the green onion diagonally and trim the stems off the Korean green chili peppers before slicing them as well. (If you prefer less heat, you can use mild kkwari gochu instead of spicy ones).

Heat 1 tablespoon of cooking oil in a pan over high heat. Add the prepared squid, sliced green onion, and green chili peppers to the pan. Begin stir-frying over high heat.

Once the squid starts to cook, add the seasoning ingredients: 1/2 tablespoon of cooking wine (mirin), 1 teaspoon of mild red chili powder, and 1 teaspoon of oyster sauce. Continue to stir-fry everything together. (If you like it spicier, feel free to adjust the amount of chili powder or add a bit of Cheongyang chili pepper).

The key is to keep the heat high and stir-fry quickly for about 1-2 minutes, ensuring all ingredients are well combined. Stir-frying over high heat for a short period prevents the squid from releasing excess water, resulting in a tender and slightly chewy texture.

Transfer the delicious stir-fried squid to a serving dish. While it’s wonderful on its own, it also makes a fantastic and satisfying one-bowl meal served over a bed of hot rice. For an extra touch of aroma and flavor, you can drizzle a little sesame oil over the top just before serving.
