Main Ingredients

  • 250g Rice tteok (or wheat tteok)
  • 1/2 medium Onion
  • 3 sheets Flat fish cake
  • 1 stalk Green onion
  • 2 Hard-boiled eggs
  • 3 Sausages
  • 1 packet Ramen noodles

Seasoning

  • 2 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 3 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
  • 2 Tbsp Olive oil
  • 3 Tbsp Guk-ganjang (Korean soup soy sauce)
  • 3 Tbsp Sugar
  • 1L Water

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare your tteokbokki rice cakes. If they are stuck together, gently separate them. Rinse them lightly in cold water 1-2 times. (You can use either rice tteok or wheat tteok!)

Step 1

Step 2

Cut the 3 sheets of flat fish cake into bite-sized pieces. You can cut them into irregular shapes (‘motnani’ style) or triangles – whatever is easiest and most appealing for kids!

Step 2

Step 3

Thickly slice the onion and roughly chop the green onion. Adding vegetables will deepen the flavor of the broth significantly.

Step 3

Step 4

Slice the sausages diagonally. If you’re making this for children, consider cutting them into cute shapes!

Step 4

Step 5

In a wide pan or pot, heat 2 Tbsp of olive oil. Add the chopped green onions and sliced onions and stir-fry for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Stir-frying them like this brings out their natural sweetness, making the dish even more delicious.

Step 5

Step 6

Add the sliced sausages and fish cakes to the stir-fried vegetables and cook for another minute. This allows the ingredients to get coated in the oil.

Step 6

Step 7

Now, pour in 1L of water. Add 2 Tbsp gochujang, 3 Tbsp gochugaru, 3 Tbsp guk-ganjang, and 3 Tbsp sugar to create the sauce. Stir everything together until well combined. Taste the sauce and adjust the amount of sugar or chili flakes according to your personal preference.

Step 7

Step 8

Once the sauce comes to a boil, add the 2 hard-boiled eggs and the rice cakes. Cook over medium heat for about 5 minutes, or until the rice cakes become soft and chewy. Be mindful of the cooking time to prevent the tteok from becoming too mushy.

Step 8

Step 9

When the rice cakes are cooked, add the ramen noodles and continue to cook over high heat for just 2-3 minutes. It’s important not to overcook the ramen so it doesn’t become soggy.

Step 9

Step 10

Once the ramen noodles are perfectly cooked, your delicious rabokki, or ‘ratteokbokki,’ is ready! For an extra treat, you can top it with a generous amount of mozzarella cheese to melt over the top, or sprinkle with Parmesan cheese for an even richer flavor. Enjoy your meal!
