Main Ingredients

  • 10 pieces of tteokbokki tteok (rice cakes for stir-fry) or small rice cakes (adjust quantity to your preference)
  • 2 Brazil nuts or your favorite nuts (optional)

Seasoning

  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce (use less if using Korean soup soy sauce)
  • 2 Tbsp corn syrup or maltose (adjust sweetness to your liking)
  • 1 tsp minced garlic (add a little more if you love garlic flavor)
  • 2 Tbsp water (to adjust the consistency of the sauce)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare your rice cakes. If using tteokbokki tteok, cut them into bite-sized pieces. Small rice cakes can be used as they are. Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the prepared rice cakes and fry them until golden brown and crispy. Stir occasionally to prevent them from sticking together. The key is to get them crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside!

Step 1

Step 2

Once the rice cakes are beautifully fried, push them to one side of the pan. Add the soy sauce, corn syrup, minced garlic, and water to the other side and let the sauce simmer. When the sauce begins to bubble, add the crushed Brazil nuts (or other nuts) and toss them with the rice cakes. Crushing the nuts adds a lovely texture and nutty aroma.

Step 3

Now, reduce the heat to very low. Stir gently and slowly, allowing the sauce to coat the rice cakes evenly and become glossy. It’s crucial to keep stirring to prevent burning. Once the sauce has thickened and clings to the rice cakes, your delicious Tteokgangjeong is ready! It’s best enjoyed warm.
