Tteokbokki Ingredients

  • 3 cups soft rice cakes (tteok) (approx. 300g)
  • 2 cups tteokguk tteok (rice cake slices for soup) (approx. 200g)
  • 2 green onions
  • 6 sheets of fish cake (eomuk) (approx. 150g)

Spicy and Sweet Sauce

  • 4 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 3 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili powder, fine)
  • 4 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 6 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 Tbsp corn syrup (oligo당)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Place both the soft rice cakes and the tteokguk tteok into a wide, round pan. Add enough water to completely submerge the cakes. Bring to a boil over high heat.

Step 1

Step 2

While the rice cakes are cooking, let’s make the delicious sauce! In a small bowl, combine 4 Tbsp of gochujang, 3 Tbsp of fine gochugaru, 4 Tbsp of soy sauce, 6 Tbsp of sugar, and 2 Tbsp of corn syrup for a nice sheen. Stir well until the sugar is dissolved.

Step 2

Step 3

Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces. Cutting them into 2-3 pieces makes them easy for children to eat. You can also use long, cylindrical fish cakes instead of the flat sheets for a different texture.

Step 3

Step 4

Once the rice cakes are tender, add the prepared fish cakes to the pan. Pour in all the prepared sauce. Stir everything together so the sauce coats the rice cakes and fish cakes evenly.

Step 4

Step 5

Reduce the heat to medium and stir continuously as the sauce thickens and clings to the rice cakes. Once the sauce starts to reduce, add plenty of roughly chopped green onions for a fragrant aroma.

Step 5

Step 6

Continue to stir and cook for another 1-2 minutes until the tteokbokki reaches a rich red color and the sauce is slightly thickened. Once the flavors have melded beautifully, turn off the heat and enjoy your delicious tteokbokki immediately while it’s hot! It’s best served warm.
