Baek Jong-won’s Recipe: How to Make Delicious Jeyuk Bokkeum Effortlessly
Let’s make a simple and delicious Jeyuk Bokkeum recipe. This dish is known for its savory, spicy, and slightly sweet flavor profile.
Main Ingredients- Pork (neck or belly recommended) 200g
- Green onions 1/2 stalk (or 1 handful)
- Onion 1/2 medium (or 1 handful)
- Carrot 1/4 medium (or 1 handful)
- Cabbage 1/4 head (or 1 handful)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Hello everyone! Today, we’re going to make a delicious Jeyuk Bokkeum, a popular Korean stir-fried pork dish, using a simplified method inspired by Chef Baek Jong-won. It’s known for its perfect balance of spicy, sweet, and savory flavors, making it a fantastic side dish for rice or even a great snack.
Step 2
First, add the pork to a pan and stir-fry it until it’s nicely browned and cooked through. As the pork cooks, it will release some of its delicious fat. Once the pork is mostly cooked, add a generous amount of chopped green onions. The aromatic fragrance of the green onions will infuse into the pork, adding another layer of flavor.
Step 3
Continue to stir-fry the pork with the green onions, then add the sugar. Sugar is key here as it not only adds a touch of sweetness that balances the spiciness but also helps all the ingredients meld together harmoniously, creating a well-rounded flavor profile.
Step 4
Once the sugar has slightly caramelized and coated the pork, pour in about half a cup (around 100ml) of water. This step helps to create a light sauce and allows the flavors to further penetrate the meat.
Step 5
As the water simmers down and creates a little bit of sauce, you can directly add the seasoning ingredients to the pan. There’s no need to pre-mix a separate sauce, making this recipe wonderfully convenient!
Step 6
First, add 1 tsp of gochujang (Korean chili paste) and 1 tsp of soy sauce. These are the foundational elements for that signature spicy and savory taste.
Step 7
Next, add 2 tsp of gochugaru (Korean chili flakes) to enhance the color and the spiciness. Feel free to adjust the amount based on your preference for heat.
Step 8
Now, stir everything well to combine all the seasonings. Continue to stir-fry over medium heat, ensuring the sauce evenly coats the pork and vegetables. Cook until the pork is almost fully done.
Step 9
Once the pork is beautifully cooked, add the prepared vegetables: onion, carrot, and cabbage. Stir-fry them along with the pork until they soften slightly and become tender-crisp.
Step 10
When all the vegetables are cooked and the sauce is well combined with both the pork and vegetables, turn off the heat. The irresistible aroma will already be making you hungry!
Step 11
And there you have it – a delicious and satisfying Jeyuk Bokkeum! Serve it over a bowl of hot rice for an incredibly tasty meal. Enjoy your cooking!
