Main Ingredients

  • 1 pot of delicious rice (approx. 2-3 servings)
  • Water, for making Sungnyung
  • Soy sauce, to taste (adjust as needed)
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, let’s cook the rice that will be used for our delicious Sungnyung. Using high-quality rice like ‘Cham Dream Rice’ (or ‘Gyeonggimi’) will result in a much richer flavor. When cooking the rice in your rice cooker, use slightly less water than you normally would. This helps create fluffier rice grains, which are ideal for making Sungnyung. Once cooked, let the rice steam for about 10 minutes.

Step 1

Step 2

After the rice is ready, add water to the pot containing the cooked rice for making the Sungnyung. The amount of water should be roughly equal to the amount of rice, or enough to cover it. Too much water can dilute the savory flavor. Now, bring it to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally to prevent the rice from sticking to the bottom of the pot. As the rice grains break down and the characteristic savory aroma of Sungnyung begins to rise, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for another 10-15 minutes. You’ll know it’s ready when the rice grains are soft and dispersed, and the liquid has turned milky white.

Step 3

Pour the finished Sungnyung into bowls. If you like, add a tiny bit of Korean soy sauce (like Joseon Ganjang or Guk Ganjang) to enhance the savory taste. Finally, sprinkle some sesame seeds on top for added nutty flavor. Your hearty and delicious Sungnyung is now complete! Enjoy it while it’s warm for a comforting and satisfying experience.
