Tteokbokki Ingredients

  • 280g Tteokbokki rice cakes (if using refrigerated ones, rinse them in cold water or soak briefly to soften)
  • 3 sheets of fish cake (eomuk), cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 handful of cabbage, roughly chopped (adds a touch of sweetness and crunch)
  • 520ml water (or broth for extra flavor)
  • A sprinkle of sesame seeds for garnish

Spicy & Sweet Sauce Ingredients

  • 1.5 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 2 Tbsp Soy sauce
  • 3 Tbsp Sugar
  • 1 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Begin by preparing your vegetables and fish cake. Cut the fish cake into manageable, bite-sized pieces (about 2-3cm). Roughly chop the cabbage into thick shreds. Having these prepped makes the cooking process much smoother.

Step 1

Step 2

If your tteokbokki rice cakes have been refrigerated, it’s best to soften them slightly before cooking. Bring about 2.5 cups of water to a boil. Add the rice cakes and cook for just 1-2 minutes. Drain them and rinse under cold water to prevent sticking and help them absorb the sauce better later on.

Step 2

Step 3

Once the rice cakes are tender, add the prepared fish cake and cabbage to the pot. Cook over medium heat, allowing the ingredients to meld together. The cabbage should start to become tender and slightly translucent.

Step 3

Step 4

When the ingredients are partially cooked, it’s time to add the sauce! Combine the gochujang, soy sauce, sugar, and gochugaru in the pot. Stir well to ensure the paste dissolves and there are no clumps. Increase the heat slightly and let the sauce simmer and thicken, coating the rice cakes and fish cakes.

Step 4

Step 5

Once the sauce has reduced to your desired consistency, your Tteokbokki is almost ready. For a final touch of flavor and visual appeal, sprinkle a generous amount of sesame seeds over the top. Your delicious homemade Korean street food is now complete!
