How to Make Delicious Mackerel Stew Without a Fishy Smell, Perfect for Babies
This is a mackerel stew made because plain grilled mackerel can get boring. It’s delicious without any fishy smell. It’s a wonderful side dish that even picky eaters will enjoy!
Main Ingredients- 3 pieces boneless mackerel
- 82g daikon radish (cut into bite-sized pieces)
- A little green onion (chopped)
Braising Sauce- 1/2 tsp ginger powder
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 1 tsp dried shrimp powder (or finely ground dried shrimp)
- 3 Tbsp baby soy sauce
- 1/2 Tbsp sugar
- 250ml anchovy or kelp broth
- 1/2 tsp ginger powder
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 1 tsp dried shrimp powder (or finely ground dried shrimp)
- 3 Tbsp baby soy sauce
- 1/2 Tbsp sugar
- 250ml anchovy or kelp broth
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
To remove any fishy odor, soak the boneless mackerel pieces in milk for about 20 minutes. This step is particularly helpful if you’re using frozen mackerel, which can sometimes have a stronger smell. After soaking, gently rinse the mackerel under running water and pat it dry.
Step 2
Prepare the vegetables for the stew. Cut the daikon radish into bite-sized pieces, about 1 cm thick, making it easy for babies to eat. Finely chop the green onion to add its aromatic flavor.
Step 3
Pour 250ml of anchovy or kelp broth into a pot. Add 1 teaspoon of dried shrimp powder (or finely ground dried shrimp) to enhance the umami flavor. Bring the broth to a boil over medium-high heat.
Step 4
Once the broth is boiling vigorously, carefully add the prepared boneless mackerel and the cut daikon radish to the pot. Reduce the heat to medium and let them simmer until cooked through.
Step 5
As the mackerel and radish begin to cook, add all the ingredients for the braising sauce. Stir in 3 tablespoons of baby soy sauce and 1/2 tablespoon of sugar, ensuring they are well combined. Also, add 1 teaspoon of minced garlic and 1/2 teaspoon of ginger powder at this stage to eliminate any fishy smell and add depth of flavor.
Step 6
Once the sauce ingredients are mixed in, sprinkle about 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper over the mackerel to enhance its taste. Add the chopped green onion. Continue to simmer over medium-low heat, allowing the sauce to reduce and thicken into a glaze. Spoon some of the sauce over the ingredients occasionally to ensure even flavoring and to prevent sticking.
Step 7
When the sauce has reduced to your desired consistency, taste it to adjust the seasoning. If it’s too bland for your baby’s palate, add a tiny bit more soy sauce or broth. If it needs more sweetness, a touch more sugar can be added. Once the flavor is perfect, turn off the heat and serve this delicious mackerel stew!
