Main Ingredients

  • 1 can Spam (340g)
  • 3 medium potatoes
  • 1 large green onion
  • 1/2 medium onion
  • 2 red chili peppers

Seasoning Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp cooking wine (mirin)
  • 2 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 2 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
  • 1 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1 Tbsp sugar

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, open the can of Spam. Pour hot water over the Spam to rinse off some of the surface oil. This helps to retain the savory flavor while reducing excess grease, resulting in a cleaner taste.

Step 1

Step 2

Place the rinsed Spam into a plastic bag. Using a rolling pin or a similar heavy object, roughly mash or crush the Spam into bite-sized pieces. It’s best to mash it coarsely rather than finely to maintain some texture, which enhances the jjageuli’s flavor.

Step 2

Step 3

Peel the potatoes and cut them into 1.5 cm cubes. Slice the onion into strips and cut the green onion and red chili peppers diagonally. Cutting the ingredients to similar sizes ensures even cooking and a more appealing presentation.

Step 3

Step 4

In a small bowl, combine all the seasoning ingredients (3 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp cooking wine, 2 Tbsp minced garlic, 2 Tbsp gochugaru, 1 Tbsp gochujang, 1 Tbsp sugar). Mix well to create a delicious seasoning paste.

Step 4

Step 5

In a heated pot or wok, add the cubed potatoes first. Then, layer the sliced onion on top, followed by the mashed Spam. Layering the ingredients this way allows heat to distribute evenly, contributing to a better cooking result.

Step 5

Step 6

Evenly spread the prepared seasoning paste over the ingredients. Add 2.5 cups (approximately 500ml) of water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to medium heat and simmer for about 10-15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 6

Step 7

Once the potatoes are cooked through and soft, add the diagonally sliced green onion and red chili peppers. Simmer for a little longer. The addition of spicy flavor and crisp texture from the vegetables further enhances the jjageuli. Turn off the heat and enjoy your delicious meal!
