Rich Beef Jerky Ramen
The Delicious Union of Beef Jerky and Ramen! (An Adaptation of Chef Kim Seung-soo’s Recipe from ‘Pyeonstorang’)
I was inspired by Chef Kim Seung-soo from the TV show ‘Pyeonstorang’ when I saw him cooking ramen with beef jerky. So, I decided to try making my own version, with a slight twist! Beef jerky is typically made from lean beef, and simply adding it to ramen dramatically transforms the broth. The deep beef flavor infuses the soup, creating a rich and complex taste. This ramen is truly delicious!
Ingredients- 1 pack beef jerky
- 1 measuring cup oyster mushrooms
- 3 cm piece of zucchini
- 3 cm piece of carrot
- 1/2 onion
- 5 perilla leaves
- 3 cloves garlic
- 1/2 Tbsp red pepper flakes
- 500ml water
- 1 pack ramen noodles
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s prepare the beef jerky. It’s often easier to cut with scissors than a knife, so snip the jerky into bite-sized pieces, about 2-3 cm.
Step 2
Now, let’s prep the vegetables. Thinly slice the onion. Julienne the zucchini and carrot into similar lengths. For the oyster mushrooms, gently tear them apart lengthwise so they release more flavor into the broth.
Step 3
This ramen involves a sautéing step. Heat a little cooking oil in a frying pan over medium-low heat. Add the sliced garlic and the prepared beef jerky, and sauté until fragrant and the jerky releases its aroma.
Step 4
Once the garlic and jerky are lightly sautéed, add all the prepared vegetables (onion, zucchini, carrot, and oyster mushrooms) to the pan. Continue to stir-fry them together, allowing their natural sweetness and flavors to develop.
Step 5
Now, we’ll build the broth. Add 1/2 tablespoon of red pepper flakes to the sautéed ingredients and stir briefly to toast the flakes and release their spicy aroma. Then, pour in 500ml of water. You can adjust the amount of red pepper flakes to your preference; half a tablespoon provides a pleasant, mild spice.
Step 6
Add the ramen soup base and stir well to dissolve it into the broth. Finally, add the perilla leaves, roughly torn. Adding them at the end helps preserve their fresh, aromatic scent.
Step 7
Once the broth comes to a rolling boil, add the ramen noodles. Gently separate the noodles with chopsticks as they begin to cook to prevent clumping.
Step 8
As the noodles near doneness, ladle some of the hot broth over the noodles in the bowl. This helps the noodles absorb more flavor. Once the noodles are cooked to your liking, your delicious beef jerky ramen is ready to enjoy!
