Ever since visiting a famous chain restaurant a couple of years ago and tasting their impressive giant donkatsu, I’ve been inspired to recreate that experience at home. Whether you have frozen pre-made donkatsu or your own homemade version, making a large, satisfying donkatsu is a fantastic idea for a special treat. Let’s embark on this culinary adventure together!

Main Ingredients

  • Donkatsu (frozen or homemade) – 4 pieces (choose your preference)
  • Cooking oil (plenty)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Prepare your donkatsu. Using store-bought frozen donkatsu is a convenient way to start. Of course, if you have your own homemade donkatsu, it will make the experience even more special. Don’t worry, frozen donkatsu can also be fried to a perfect crisp on the outside and remain juicy on the inside!

Step 1

Step 2

If using frozen donkatsu, thaw it in the microwave for about 3-5 minutes until it’s slightly softened. Once it’s no longer rock-hard but a bit pliable, heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a deep frying pan. Arrange the 4 donkatsu pieces in the pan so they don’t overlap, filling the space like a puzzle. This ensures the oil reaches all sides evenly for maximum crispiness.

Step 2

Step 3

Fry over medium heat until golden brown and beautifully crisp. Let one side cook for about 4-5 minutes until it reaches a lovely golden-brown color. Then, carefully flip each piece using tongs and cook the other side until it’s equally golden and crisp. Keep an eye on the heat to prevent burning, and cook them slowly for the best texture.

Step 3

Step 4

Once both sides of the donkatsu are perfectly crispy and cooked through, carefully transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil. Generously pour your favorite donkatsu sauce or any sauce of your choice over the warm donkatsu. Voilà! You’ve just created an impressive, authentic ‘Wang’ Donkatsu right in your own kitchen, rivaling any restaurant. Enjoy your delicious meal!
