How to Make Adorable Apple-Shaped Cookies: Tips & Tricks
I tried making these after seeing them on ‘Cooking Tree’s’ YouTube channel, and they turned out even prettier than I expected! They make a wonderful gift and taste like classic, delicious butter cookies. I’ll share my little tips to make it easy for you!
Dough (for 18-20 cookies)- 150g unsalted butter, softened
- 120g powdered sugar, sifted twice
- 2g vanilla extract (approx. 1/2 tsp)
- 40g egg, lightly beaten (about 1 small egg)
- 1g salt (a pinch)
- 240g cake flour, sifted twice
- 60g almond flour, sifted twice
- 1g baking powder (a pinch)
- Red food coloring, as needed
- Green food coloring, as needed
- Chocolate chips, to your liking
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
In a large bowl, place the softened unsalted butter and cream it using a hand mixer or whisk until smooth and fluffy. Ensure the butter is at room temperature; too cold or too melted butter can cause the mixture to separate.
Step 2
Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar to the butter mixture, creaming well after each addition. Once combined, stir in the vanilla extract. Then, slowly add the lightly beaten egg in portions, whipping continuously to prevent separation. Continue whipping for about 3-5 minutes until the mixture is light and airy.
Step 3
In a separate bowl, combine the cake flour, almond flour, and baking powder. Sift these dry ingredients together twice. Add the sifted dry ingredients to the butter mixture and gently fold them in with a spatula until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can develop gluten and make the cookies tough.
Step 4
Once the dry ingredients are almost incorporated, cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel. Gently bring the dough together with your hands until it forms a cohesive ball. Avoid kneading; just mix until the ingredients are combined.
Step 5
Divide the dough into two portions: about 50g and about 30g. Add red food coloring to the 50g portion and green food coloring to the 30g portion. Wear gloves and knead each portion until the color is evenly distributed.
Step 6
Place the remaining plain dough (white) on a sheet of parchment paper and flatten it into a round shape. Cover the red dough with parchment paper and use a rolling pin to flatten it into a thin sheet (about 0.3-0.5 cm thick). Shape the green dough into a slightly tilted triangle on a lightly floured surface. Wrap the plain dough in plastic wrap and chill in the freezer for 1 hour. Wrap the red and green dough sheets individually in parchment paper and chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour to firm them up.
Step 7
Take the chilled plain dough out of the freezer. Remove the parchment paper. Using a knife, carefully score the top and bottom surfaces of the dough to create angled lines, resembling the texture of an apple’s cross-section. Make shallow cuts about 1.5 cm apart.
Step 8
Gently place the thinly rolled red dough over the scored plain dough, covering it completely. Use the parchment paper to gently press the red dough onto the plain dough, ensuring it adheres well.
Step 9
Place the green triangular dough piece on top of the red dough to resemble a leaf or stem. Ensure it’s not too thick.
Step 10
Using a knife, carefully slice the dough log into cookies, about 1.5 cm thick. Press chocolate chips into the cut surface of each cookie to represent apple seeds. Be gentle to avoid pushing them too deep.
Step 11
Preheat your oven to 170°C (340°F). Reduce the temperature to 160°C (320°F) and bake the cookies for 15-20 minutes, or until lightly golden. Baking times may vary depending on your oven. Once baked, remove from the oven and let them cool completely on a wire rack. Congratulations on creating these incredibly cute apple-shaped butter cookies! Enjoy! ♥
