Main Ingredients

  • 120g stewing beef, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 serving of Jajangmyeon noodles (Chunhwa noodles)

Jajang Sauce

  • 30g commercial Jajang powder (for 2-3 servings)
  • 300g water (adjust according to Jajang powder quantity)
  • 2 tbsp cooking oil
  • 1/2 tbsp minced garlic (optional, for enhanced flavor)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, heat 2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until they become translucent. Then, add a pinch of salt, 1/2 tablespoon of sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon of red pepper flakes (if using). Continue to sauté the onions slowly for about 5 minutes until they turn golden brown and release a sweet aroma. This step is key to developing the deep, sweet flavor of the Jajang sauce.

Step 1

Step 2

Once the onions are nicely browned, add the bite-sized beef pieces to the pan. Increase the heat to high and stir-fry the beef quickly until its surface turns white. Searing the beef over high heat helps to lock in the juices, keeping it tender and moist. If you like, stir in 1/2 tablespoon of minced garlic along with the beef for an extra layer of flavor.

Step 2

Step 3

In a separate small bowl, combine the 30g of Jajang powder with 300g of water. Whisk thoroughly with a spoon or a small whisk until the powder is completely dissolved and there are no lumps. This ensures a smooth and well-emulsified sauce.

Step 3

Step 4

When the beef and onions are almost cooked, pour the prepared Jajang sauce mixture into the pan. Stir well with a spatula or spoon to combine everything. Make sure all the ingredients are evenly coated with the sauce.

Step 4

Step 5

Reduce the heat to medium and let the Jajang sauce simmer for about 3-5 minutes, or until it thickens to your desired consistency. Stir occasionally to prevent the sauce from sticking to the bottom of the pan. If the sauce becomes too thick, you can add a little more water; if it’s too thin, continue simmering until it reaches the right consistency.

Step 5

Step 6

Finally, bring a pot of water to a boil and cook the Jajangmyeon noodles according to the package instructions. Once the noodles are cooked, drain them thoroughly in a colander and place them in a serving bowl. Ladle the hot Jajang sauce generously over the noodles and mix well. For an extra touch, you can garnish with shredded cucumber or peas.
