Main Ingredients- 6 boiled potatoes (approx. 500g)
- 12 pieces of long ham (hot dog style or sausages)
- 12 wooden skewers or toothpicks
Potato Dough Ingredients- 1 Tbsp flour (cake flour or all-purpose flour)
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (approx. 80g)
- 4 eggs
- 2 Tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 tsp sugar
- 0.5 tsp salt
- 1 Tbsp flour (cake flour or all-purpose flour)
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (approx. 80g)
- 4 eggs
- 2 Tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 tsp sugar
- 0.5 tsp salt
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s prepare the potato dough, the star of our hot dogs. Peel the boiled potatoes and mash them finely with a fork or masher while they are still warm. It’s important to mash them smoothly without any lumps. Add mayonnaise, flour, sugar, and salt to the mashed potatoes and mix well to form a dough. It should have a slightly sticky consistency.
Step 2
Prepare the ham. Cut the ham into pieces that are easy to wrap with the potato dough. If you’re using hot dog-style ham, use it as is. If using regular sausages, cut them into 2-3 pieces. Insert a wooden skewer or toothpick into one end of the ham to secure it, creating the hot dog shape.
Step 3
Now, let’s get ready to coat the hot dogs. In a wide bowl, crack the 4 eggs and beat them well with a fork. On another wide plate, spread out the breadcrumbs generously.
Step 4
We’ll now wrap the ham with the potato dough. Hold the skewer of the ham, take a portion of the potato dough, and carefully wrap it around the ham, shaping it evenly. Make sure the ham is completely covered and the surface is smooth. Aim for a moderate thickness so the hot dog shape is maintained, not too thick.
Step 5
Next, we’ll coat the shaped potato hot dogs with the batter. First, dip the potato-wrapped hot dog into the beaten egg, ensuring it’s evenly coated. Then, lightly shake off any excess egg and place it on the plate with breadcrumbs. Press the breadcrumbs firmly onto the hot dog, coating it completely. Gently patting the breadcrumbs will help them adhere better.
Step 6
It’s time to fry! Pour plenty of cooking oil into a deep pan or pot and heat it over medium heat. Once the oil reaches about 170-180°C (when a pinch of breadcrumbs floats immediately), carefully place the potato hot dogs into the oil. Fry them until golden brown and crispy on all sides, about 3-4 minutes. Adjust the heat as needed to ensure they cook through evenly while becoming wonderfully crisp.
Step 7
Remove the perfectly fried potato hot dogs from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain any excess grease. Your golden-brown potato hot dogs are ready! Serve them warm with your favorite sauces like ketchup or mustard. The delightful combination of crispy exterior, soft potato inside, and savory ham is truly exceptional.
