- Soy sauce 3 Tbsp
- Sugar 1 Tbsp
- Honey (or corn syrup) 2 Tbsp

- Sesame oil 1 Tbsp
- Sesame seeds (for garnish)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare 1/2 cup of baektae (soybeans for doenjang/gochujang), the star of this Jangjorim. Rinse the beans thoroughly, then soak them in plenty of water the night before. Soaking for at least 5 hours will ensure the beans become tender and absorb the sauce well.
Step 2
The next day, take a look! You’ll see that the beans have plumped up significantly compared to before. This step is crucial for achieving soft beans.
Step 3
Rinse the soaked beans under running water multiple times until clean. Any loose skins that detached during soaking should be skimmed off and discarded. Place the clean beans into the inner pot of your rice cooker.
Step 4
Now, it’s time to add dried kelp to enhance the savory depth of the Jangjorim. Add 6 sheets of rinsed dried kelp on top of the beans. Kelp adds a profound flavor to the dish.
Step 5
Pour 300ml of water into the rice cooker and close the lid. Select the ‘Steam’ function on your rice cooker and set the timer for 20 minutes. Thanks to the rice cooker, cooking beans has become incredibly simple!
Step 6
After 20 minutes, carefully open the lid once the steam has been released. You’ll see that the beans are cooked to perfection. At this point, remove the kelp and set it aside to use in other dishes or discard as desired. If any new bean skins have separated during cooking, carefully pick them out and discard them.
Step 7
Now, it’s time to add the seasonings that will create the Jangjorim flavor. Add 3 Tbsp of soy sauce and 1 Tbsp of cooking oil (or olive oil) to the pot with the beans and mix well. Adding cooking oil helps make the beans even softer and adds a beautiful sheen. Then, select the ‘Reheat’ or ‘Cook’ function on your rice cooker and cook for 9 minutes.
Step 8
After 9 minutes of reheating, you’ll notice the liquid in the pot has reduced slightly. Stir the beans once to ensure even coating, then reheat for another 9 minutes to let it simmer down. This process helps achieve the right consistency for the Jangjorim.
Step 9
Next, it’s time to add the sweetness. Mix in 1 Tbsp of sugar and 2 Tbsp of honey (or corn syrup) with the beans. You can adjust the sweetness to your preference. After adding the sweeteners, reheat and simmer the beans for another 9 minutes.
Step 10
Finally, when the liquid has reduced to about 3mm (a little bit remaining), turn off the heat. Stir in 1 Tbsp of sesame oil to complete the flavor and aroma of the Jangjorim. The nutty fragrance of sesame oil will make it even more delicious.
Step 11
Transfer the beautifully cooked Jangjorim to a serving dish. Sprinkle some sesame seeds on top for an extra nutty flavor and appealing look. Your delicious rice cooker soybean Jangjorim is now ready to be enjoyed with a warm bowl of rice!
