Aromatic Butterbur Leaf Rice Wraps (Ssbap) Bento
Late Spring Delight: A Slightly Bitter Butterbur Ssbap Bento
Enjoy the taste of late spring with this delightful butterbur leaf rice wrap bento! Made with fresh butterbur leaves harvested from my brother-in-law’s garden, this bento uses any leftover leaves to create a flavorful and healthy meal. The unique, slightly bitter yet aromatic flavor of butterbur, combined with nutritious rice and savory soybean paste, makes this a perfect springtime treat.
Bento Ingredients- 11 fresh butterbur leaves
- 1 bowl of nutritious mixed-grain rice
- A little bit of seasoned soybean paste (makjang)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, carefully clean and prepare the butterbur leaves. Blanch them in boiling water for about 30 seconds to a minute until they become tender but still hold their shape. This process softens the slightly bitter taste while preserving their lovely aroma. Immediately rinse the blanched leaves under cold running water to stop the cooking and maintain their vibrant green color. Have your nutritious rice and the savory makjang ready to assemble.
Step 2
Lay a blanched butterbur leaf flat. Place a portion of the nutritious rice in the center. Add a small amount of the makjang over the rice for an extra layer of savory flavor. Carefully fold in the sides of the butterbur leaf, then roll it up tightly from the bottom to create a neat rice wrap. Ensure it’s secure so the filling doesn’t spill out.
