Main Ingredients- 4 rolls Garaetteok (rice cakes, approx. 400g)
- 1 cup water (200ml)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Prepare the garaetteok. If you have pre-cut tteokbokki-style rice cakes, use them as is. If you have thick garaetteok from a market, cut them into bite-sized pieces (about 5-7cm). If the rice cakes are hard, soak them in cold water briefly or blanch them in boiling water until softened. This will help them absorb the sauce better and improve their texture.
Step 2
Let’s make the delicious tteokbokki sauce! In a pot or deep pan, combine 1 cup (200ml) of water with 1 Tbsp sugar, 1 Tbsp fine gochugaru, 3 Tbsp corn syrup, and 2.5 Tbsp gochujang. (Press down firmly when measuring the gochujang for accuracy.)
Step 3
Stir the sauce ingredients together and bring to a boil over high heat. Once the sauce starts bubbling, add all the prepared garaetteok. Stir gently to coat the rice cakes evenly with the sauce. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer, allowing the sauce to penetrate the tteok.
Step 4
Continue to cook for about 6 minutes after adding the tteok. As it cooks, the sauce will thicken and become glossy, clinging to the rice cakes. If the tteok seems too hard or the sauce too thin, add a little more water or simmer for another 1-2 minutes to reach your desired consistency. Your chewy and flavorful Garaetteok Tteokbokki is ready!
