Gratin Ingredients

  • 8 small potatoes (or 3-4 medium-sized potatoes)
  • 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp cooking oil
  • 1 Tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp salt
  • A pinch of black pepper
  • Shredded mozzarella cheese (to taste)
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese (chopped or shredded)

Creamy Sauce

  • 250ml heavy cream
  • 1 Tbsp cream cheese

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Slice the potatoes into bite-sized pieces. If you plan to use the microwave, slicing the potatoes thinner or parboiling them beforehand will shorten the cooking time.

Step 1

Step 2

Heat 1 tablespoon of cooking oil and 1 tablespoon of butter in a frying pan over medium-low heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.

Step 2

Step 3

Once the garlic releases its aroma, add the sliced potatoes to the pan and stir-fry. Season lightly with salt, as the cheese and cream sauce will add more flavor later.

Step 3

Step 4

Cook the potatoes, flipping them occasionally, until they are lightly golden brown on both sides. You want them to be partially cooked and still have a slight bite.

Step 4

Step 5

When the potatoes are about halfway cooked, pour in the 250ml of heavy cream and bring to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat. Let the sauce bubble and thicken as it coats the potatoes.

Step 5

Step 6

Once the cream has thickened and turned a slightly beige color, stir in 1 tablespoon of cream cheese until it’s completely melted and smoothly incorporated into the sauce.

Step 6

Step 7

Now, layer the cooked potatoes and sauce into your gratin dish or oven-safe pan. Generously top with both mozzarella and cheddar cheese. More cheese is always better!

Step 7

Step 8

Bake in a preheated oven at 150°C (300°F) for about 20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and golden brown. (If using a microwave, heat for 5-7 minutes, checking periodically until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Adjust time as needed.)
