Ingredients

  • 1 cup Kawaji No. 1 rice (or regular short-grain rice)
  • 150g canned tuna, drained
  • A pinch of sesame seeds (for garnish)
  • 1 Tbsp perilla oil (for tuna mixture)
  • 1/2 tsp salt (for tuna mixture)
  • 1.5 cups anchovy-kelp broth (or rice water)
  • 1 handful of green onions, finely chopped (for garnish)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare all the ingredients needed to make this delicious tuna rice bowl. It’s best to rinse the rice thoroughly and let it drain in a sieve.

Step 1

Step 2

In a pot or rice cooker, add the rinsed rice and pour in 1.5 cups of anchovy-kelp broth (or rice water). Bring it to a boil over high heat.

Step 2

Step 3

Once the water starts boiling, stir the rice continuously from the bottom to prevent it from sticking to the pot. This step is crucial for achieving the best texture and flavor.

Step 3

Step 4

When the rice begins to bubble and boil vigorously, reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot tightly and let it cook for about 8 minutes, or until the water has been absorbed.

Step 4

Step 5

While the rice is cooking, let’s make the tuna mixture. In a bowl, combine the drained tuna, 1 tablespoon of perilla oil, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Mash and mix well with a fork. Finally, add a pinch of sesame seeds and mix again to create the flavorful tuna topping.

Step 5

Step 6

Finely chop the green onions that will be used as a garnish. Rinse them well before chopping. Cutting them not too thick will make the presentation more appealing.

Step 6

Step 7

After cooking the rice on low heat for 8 minutes, open the lid to check if the rice is cooked through. If the rice grains are fluffy and well-cooked, proceed to the next step.

Step 7

Step 8

Spread the prepared, delicious tuna mixture evenly over the cooked rice. Then, generously sprinkle the chopped green onions on top. Cover the pot again and continue to cook over very low heat for another 2 minutes. After turning off the heat, let it steam, covered, for 5 minutes. Your moist and flavorful tuna rice bowl is now ready!

Step 8

Step 9

Sprinkle a few sesame seeds over the finished tuna rice bowl and drizzle with 1 tablespoon of perilla oil. For an extra burst of flavor, mix in some soy sauce (to taste) and enjoy! It’s a truly delightful and satisfying meal.
