Healthy All Year Round! Making Sweet & Tart Blueberry Syrup
Recipe for Healthy Blueberry Syrup, Blueberry Milk, Blueberry Juice, and Diet Juice using Frozen Blueberries
Did you know blueberries are one of the top 10 superfoods according to TIME magazine? They are packed with antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins, which are excellent for our health. They are also rich in dietary fiber, polyphenols, and flavonoids. While fresh blueberries are delicious, using frozen blueberries can actually enhance their benefits! Frozen blueberries are often more affordable than fresh ones and boast even higher antioxidant power, making them a fantastic year-round option. Today, we’ll be making a sweet and tart blueberry syrup using frozen blueberries. This syrup is your secret weapon for refreshing, healthy diet drinks all summer long. Instead of regular sugar, we’re using xylose and oligosaccharide for a healthier twist. Enjoy your blueberry syrup mixed with milk for a creamy blueberry milk, spooned over yogurt for a delightful blueberry yogurt, or combined with sparkling water for a zesty blueberry ade. Let’s get started on making this versatile and healthy blueberry syrup that lets you enjoy the goodness of blueberries anytime!
Main Ingredients- 200g frozen blueberries
- 100g xylose
- 100g oligosaccharide
- 20g lemon juice
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
We’ll start by sterilizing the glass jar for your blueberry syrup. Place the jar in a pot so that its opening is submerged in water, and bring the water to a boil. This method helps prevent the glass from cracking.
Step 2
Once the jar is thoroughly sterilized, carefully remove it and let it cool. After it has completely cooled, use a clean kitchen towel to meticulously dry the inside, ensuring no moisture remains.
Step 3
Lightly rinse the frozen blueberries under cold running water. Be careful not to wash them for too long, as this can cause nutrients to leach out. Drain the rinsed blueberries in a sieve, then gently pat them dry with a kitchen towel to remove excess moisture.
Step 4
In a wide bowl, combine the blueberries, xylose, and oligosaccharide. The oligosaccharide might be sticky and difficult to mix initially. Use a spatula or spoon to gently stir, being careful not to mash the blueberries, until everything is evenly combined.
Step 5
Transfer the mixed blueberry mixture into the sterilized glass jar. Pour the 20g of lemon juice evenly over the top. Let it sit at room temperature for about a day to allow the flavors to meld and deepen.
Step 6
After a day, you might notice some undissolved xylose at the bottom. Don’t worry! Gently shake the jar to mix. Once the xylose has dissolved to your satisfaction, store it in the refrigerator. Even when refrigerated, occasional shaking will help keep the contents well-mixed and fresh.
Step 7
The next day, let’s make some delicious blueberry milk! For those focusing on health and diet, we’re using low-fat milk. You can certainly use regular milk if you prefer.
Step 8
To make blueberry milk, add 2-3 tablespoons of your homemade blueberry syrup to a clear glass, then pour in the fresh low-fat milk. Your delicious blueberry milk is ready! If you’re craving a refreshing blueberry ade, simply add your blueberry syrup to a glass and top it off with chilled sparkling water. The combination of effervescent bubbles and blueberries creates a delightful healthy diet drink. Alternatively, mixing the blueberry syrup with yogurt makes for a fantastic blueberry yogurt treat!
