Main Ingredients

  • 1/2 head broccoli
  • 1/4 onion
  • 1/5 carrot
  • 3 eggs
  • 100g ground beef
  • 2 bowls cooked rice (preferably day-old or slightly cooled)

Jjajang Sauce & Seasoning

  • 1/2 cup store-bought or homemade jjajang sauce
  • 1 Tbsp sugar (optional, adjust based on jjajang sauce sweetness)
  • A pinch of garlic flakes (for garnish)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, let’s prepare the vegetables to complement the fried rice. Wash the broccoli thoroughly, perhaps using a little baking soda for extra cleanliness. Cut the florets into bite-sized pieces.

Step 1

Step 2

Bring a pot of water to a boil with a tiny pinch of salt. Add the prepared broccoli and blanch for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. This step helps maintain the broccoli’s vibrant color and improves its texture.

Step 2

Step 3

Drain the blanched broccoli and rinse it under cold water, then set aside. Now, heat a little cooking oil in a pan over high heat. Add the ground beef and stir-fry, breaking it up with a spatula to prevent clumping. Searing the beef until it’s lightly browned will enhance its flavor.

Step 3

Step 4

Once the beef is almost cooked, add the thinly sliced onion and carrot to the pan. Stir-fry over medium heat until the vegetables become translucent and tender. The natural sweetness of the vegetables will emerge, enriching the fried rice.

Step 4

Step 5

Prepare another pan, or push the fried rice ingredients to one side. Add a little cooking oil to the empty side of the pan and pour in the beaten eggs. Before the eggs set completely, use a spatula to scramble them into bite-sized pieces. Cook over medium-low heat for a tender texture.

Step 5

Step 6

Combine the scrambled eggs with the stir-fried beef and vegetables. Now, add 2 bowls of cooked rice and stir well to ensure all ingredients are evenly distributed among the rice grains. It’s important to achieve fluffy, separated grains. If the rice seems too moist, continue stir-frying over low heat to dry it out slightly.

Step 6

Step 7

Finally, add the blanched broccoli to the pan and stir-fry briefly to integrate everything. The broccoli will add both texture and a lovely splash of color.

Step 7

Step 8

Now it’s time to incorporate the jjajang sauce. Pour about 1/2 cup of jjajang sauce into a separate pan. If desired, stir in 1 tablespoon of sugar and heat gently. If the sauce is too thick, you can add a little water to adjust the consistency.

Step 8

Step 9

Spoon the warmed jjajang sauce generously over the prepared fried rice. Sprinkle with crispy garlic flakes for a final touch. Your delicious and visually appealing jjajang fried rice is ready to be enjoyed!
