Ingredients- 2 mini sweet pumpkins
- A little baking soda
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Washing thoroughly is key! First, generously sprinkle baking soda onto the pumpkin skin and gently rub it with your hands. Use a brush to meticulously clean the grooves in the skin. After cleaning with baking soda, rinse thoroughly with running water 2-3 times.
Step 2
The pumpkin skin can be quite tough, making it difficult to cut. To make it easier, microwave the whole pumpkin for about 3 minutes. This will slightly soften it, making it much easier to slice.
Step 3
After microwaving to soften, cut the pumpkin in half. Then, use a spoon to carefully scoop out and remove the seeds and inner pulp.
Step 4
To make them easy for children to eat and convenient for steaming, cut the halved pumpkins into about 8 wedges. Avoid cutting them too small, as they might break apart during steaming. Aim for a moderate size.
Step 5
Add water to a steamer and bring it to a boil. Once boiling, place the prepared pumpkin pieces inside, cover, and steam for about 7 minutes. You can check for doneness by inserting a chopstick or fork; it should go in easily when cooked. Steam for about 7 minutes after the water boils, then let it cool slightly with the lid open. This will result in a wonderfully sweet, fluffy, and tender mini steamed pumpkin. (Ready in about 3 minutes in the microwave + 7-10 minutes steaming!)
Step 6
While delicious as is, you can also enhance this dish to suit your taste. For a ‘egg slut’ style, top the steamed pumpkin with plenty of eggs and cheese. Alternatively, mix it with mayonnaise, plain yogurt, and chopped nuts to create a simple salad. This adds essential nutrients and a new flavor, preventing boredom and making it enjoyable to eat.
